If there is one thing we know, it is that the internet can create avenues to opportunity that in past generations would be impossible.  This is especially true for artists and entertainers.  In the past few years we have personally seen artists like Justin Bieber, Charice, and Esmee Denters use the platform of YouTube to rise to fame and get international recognition from some of the best in the music business for their extraordinary talent.  It is this model that has also brought us 14 year old Australian pop singer, Cody Simpson.  Cody was discovered on YouTube in 2009 by American record producer Shawn Cambell, who help put Cody on the fast track to a deal with Atlantic records.  Campell’s help lead to the release of Simpson’s EP 4 U, which featured the digital singles, and videos  “All Day”, “Iy Iy” featuring Flo Rida, and “Summer Time.”  Each single’s video racked up millions of views and charted respectably outside of the United States, but resinated primarily with a tween audience. This made it difficult for him to crossover into the American pop mainstream.  Like Charice and Justin Bieber before him, those millions of views prove that their is an audience rooting for Simpson, but it would ultimately the strength of a song’s potential for universal appeal that would make all the difference. It was with that in mind that Simpson was paired up with a musical development team lead by The Messengers.

The Messengers are responsible for aiding in the composition of several of the biggest pop songs in recent history.  The production duo’s sound  thusly help develop sound of artists like Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, and New Kids On The Block With “.  This is important to note because based on observation of their  past work,  because The Messengers’ signature seems to be centered around taking artists with a very specific niche of appeal, and pairing that artist with a song that can not only speak to their familiar audience, but also match the artist with a tone or theme that is relatable to a much broader audience at the same time.  This is now what is being done for Cody With “On My Mind”

Until now, many American pop music fans could more than likely be dismissive towards  Cody as an Australian repeat of  Justin Bieber ‘s formula for early success.  Perhaps Bieber startled the line between tween niche and mainstream star a bit more precisely in the past, but the reason probably came down to the power of the song.  “On My Mind is Cody’s chance to rebound in America, and with The Messengers help  give American fans a completely different idea of what to expect from him.

Why?  The reason is simple. The Messenger co-writing on this track tries  to replace or better define the image of the 13-14 year old kid, singing  predictable teen pop.   The Messengers  used “On My Mind”‘s  simple but compelling lyrics to inject Simpson’s teen pop signature with the universal feeling of infatuation over a  crush.  Whether you’re 14, 40, or 400, this is a feeling that is never forgotten, and when it is laced over a beat perfect for today’s radio, you have the best odds possible for a hit. This is proof that artist development is key, and if he  keeps getting his from talents likes of The Messengers great things just might be in store for young Cody Simpson.  Take a listen below and see what you think.
