In late 1997 R&B singer Uncle Sam emerged out of nowhere with his top ten hit “I Don’t Ever Want See You Again”. But just as quickly as his heartfelt ballad about a cheating lover climbed the charts, Uncle Sam’s music career would soon abruptly come to an end. But whatever happened to him?

To know where Uncle Sam is now, we first must understand where he came from. He first got involved with music singing in church as a child. At just the tender age of 12, Uncle Sam was traveling the country singing and preaching as the “little boy preacher”. He would later sign a record deal with Sony/Epic working with the iconic R&B group Boyz II Men on their Stonecreek Records imprint. In 1997 Uncle Sam released his self-titled debut album which featured his hit single “I Don’t Ever Want To See You Again”. A song that charted as high as the #6 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“I Don’t Ever Want To See You Again” was written and produced by Boyz II Men’s Nathan Morris, who also lends his signature baritone laced narration to the bridge of the song. But in my humble opinion, what makes this song such a classic is the emotion heard in Uncle Sam’s voice. When he ends the song by crying “Oh Lord, I need you right now, I don’t ever want to see you, you know I don’t really need you, you hung around, you let me down, feels so good you not around”, he makes you feel the emotion espoused in every lyric that he effortlessly croons. It is purely and simply R&B music at its finest. It is a song that emotionally connects the listener to the sentiments expressed in the song.

So whatever happened to Uncle Sam, the talented singer that got his start singing as a child in church? Uncle Sam now goes by the name of Pastor Samuel Turner Jr., and he is the lead pastor of Life Saviors Christian Church in Douglasville, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. So if you want to hear about what the former R&B hit maker is up to nowadays you can check out the Pastor’s church website here, and if you are ever in the Atlanta area on a Sunday morning looking for a local Christian church to attend, I’m sure that Pastor Samuel Turner Jr. will be able to supply you with the same type of emotional connection with faith that he was able to deliver to you with his 1997 classic “I Don’t Ever Want To See You Again”.
