#ThrowbackThursday: “Sugar, We’re Going Down” by Fall Out Boy

“Sugar. We’re Going Down” was the first Top 10 hit for Fall Out Boy when it was released in 2005.

The pop rock band Fall Out Boy released their sixth studio album earlier this week American Beauty/American Psycho. The lead single for the new record, “Centuries”, was released last September and has been a commercial success for the band. “Centuries” to this point has reached as high as the #13 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Fall Out Boy wrote and recorded the majority of American Beauty/American Psycho last summer while touring in support of their 2013 album Save Rock and Roll with fellow pop rock act Paramore. In an interview with Alternative Press back last month, bassist Pete Wentz talked about the band’s progression in relation to their latest release.

“I think this album more than Save Rock And Roll probably presses further out on the boundaries. While “Centuries” and “Immortals” from Big Hero 6 could fall in line with where we were at with “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark,” I think the album as a whole presses a bit further out.”

Pete Wentz and the rest of Fall Out Boy will be performing at a number of high profile sporting events in the next few weeks. This weekend, they will be performing at the NHL All-Star weekend festivities in Columbus, Ohio. The following weekend, the band will head out to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona where they will perform for troops prior to the Super Bowl. That performance will be aired on VH1 on January 30th. But In light of Fall Out Boy’s new album, this week on #tbt we take a moment to remember their first mainstream hit “Sugar, We’re Going Down”.

In May of 2005, Fall Out Boy released their second studio album From Under the Cork Tree on Island Records. The album served as the band’s breakthrough album in terms of it’s mainstream success, breaking into the Billboard 200 albums chart Top 10, peaking at the #9 position. A large part of the success of that album can be contributed to the popularity of the lead single “Sugar, We’re Going Down”. But according to Pete Wentz, Island Records was not a big fan of the catchy song at first. As he told Spin Magazine in a 2009 interview, “Our label told us the chorus was too wordy and the guitars were too heavy and that the radio wasn’t going to play it. I felt so good when that song broke.” Despite the label’s concerns, “Sugar, We’re Going Down” proved to be quite successful, as it gave Fall Out Boy their first Top 10 hit, reaching as high as the #8 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. And that “too wordy” chorus is just as catchy when heard today as it was upon it’s initial release.

So in honor of Fall Out Boy releasing their new album American Beauty/American Psycho, this week we remember the band’s breakthrough 2005 single “Sugar, We’re Going Down”. Enjoy
