This week country music superstar Brad Paisley released his tenth studio album Moonshine in the Trunk. The first single released off of the new album is “River Bank.” The song was released back in April and has served as somewhat of a summer party anthem for country fans spending the dog days of summer letting off steam down on the river. “River Bank” has reached a moderate level of success on the charts for Paisley reaching the #52 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #12 on the Country Hot Songs chart. It doesn’t stop there for Paisley though. Even though everything so far has kept him quite busy, he is also set to release the album’s follow up single “Perfect Storm” next week.
One would think that developing this new album would be more than enough to keep Paisley busy, but he has also been serving as a judge on the ABC singing competition “Rising Star.” The series came to an end earlier this week when the show crowned a winner. Paisley served as a judge on the show alongside of fellow artists Kesha and Ludacris, while Josh Groban served as the program’s host. I’ll be honest here and say that I only watched the first two or three episodes of “Rising Star” before I lost interest. I thought the concept of the show was great, but it just wasn’t executed as well as it could have been. But when I did watch the show, and saw Paisley sitting there as a judge, I was reminded of the video where he mocked singing shows back in 2003. The video was for his song “Celebrity”, and it is the song we will remember this week here on #tbt.
“Celebrity” was the lead single off of Brad Paisley’s third album Mud on the Tires in 2003. “Celebrity” is a record that pokes fun at the celebrity culture in America, and how everyone seemingly wants to become one. The song charted well for Paisley on both country and mainstream charts. It would reach as high as the third spot on the Billboard Country Hot Songs chart, as well as garner some crossover appeal reaching the #31 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video for “Celebrity” is as fun to watch as the lyrics of the song might suggest. As I mentioned above, Paisley performs on an “American Idol” type singing show where he is judged harshly by a judge being played by none other than William Shatner. It also features a funny skit where Jason Alexander (George Costanza from Seinfeld) plays the part of a celebrity who catches an attitude with the barista at a coffee shop when his drink has milk in it instead of soy. All in all, the music video, like the song itself, is a funny take on celebrity culture.
So with Brad Paisley’s new album Moonshine in the Trunk being released earlier this week, today we remember Paisley’s 2003 hit “Celebrity.” Enjoy!
