Earlier this month Netflix released the first season to their new web television series Marvel’s Daredevil. The 13 episodes tell the story of the Marvel comic character Daredevil, who is a lawyer by day and vigilante by night. The series has been met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, even garnering an impressive 97% rating on Netflix announced this past Tuesday that it has already renewed the series and season two will be coming in 2016.

Some non-comic fan’s of the new show may be familiar with the Marvel character of Daredevil thanks to the 2003 film Daredevil, which cast Ben Affleck for the role of the blind superhero. Affleck was paired opposite actress Jennifer Garner, who played Daredevil’s love interest Elektra in the film. That on screen romance would later blossom into a real world relationship with Affleck and Garner going on to marry in 2005. The 2003 big screen adaptation of the Marvel comic has received generally mixed reviews since its release, with some critics admiring the film while others slammed it and Affleck’s portrayal of Daredevil. Affleck received the dreaded Razzie Award dubiously given to the worst actor in a given year. In case you were wondering, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a lackluster rating of 45%.

Any opinion of the film and its actors aside, Daredevil did make a positive impact on the music industry in 2003 with the release of the film’s soundtrack, Daredevil: The Album. The soundtrack was released by Wind-Up Records, the first of several soundtracks they would put out for Marvel films in the coming years. Daredevil: The Album, different from the film’s score which was also released, was largely an alt-rock/metal offering in terms of genre. And it included a song from a new Wind-Up Records rock band by the name of Evanescence, which we remember today.

“Bring Me to Life” was officially the third and final single released in support of the soundtrack, though it would become without question the album’s most notable. The song would top the Billboard Alternative Songs and Mainstream Top 40 charts in the U.S., as well as a number of other charts around the world. The song would also serve as the breakthrough single for Evanescence as a band. It would also help the group sell their debut album Fallen, released on the same day as Daredevil: The Album on March 4, 2003. Fallen would go on to become a multi-platinum record for Evanescence behind the success of not only “Bring Me to Life”, but also another hit single “My Immortal”, which was also included on the Daredevil soundtrack although not released as a single.

So with Marvel’s Daredevil web television series being released earlier this month to rave reviews, and the series already renewed for another season on Netflix, this week we remember a song featured on the 2003 Daredevil film soundtrack, “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence. Enjoy!
