TEYANA TAYLOR RELEASES LONG-AWAITED DEBUT SINGLE “MAYBE” FEATURING YO GOTTI AND PUSHA T ON G.O.O.D. MUSIC/DEF JAM; FIRST ADVANCE TRACK FROM DEBUT ALBUM, VII, ARRIVING OCTOBER 21st
TEYANA TAYLORAugust 5, 2014 – New York, NY) The multiple talents of high profile young singer-songwriter, designer, dancer/choreographer, actress, and Harlem native Teyana Taylor all come together this summer and fall, starting with the August 4th release of her long-awaited official debut single, “Maybe” featuring Yo Gotti and Pusha T, on G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings; then, the August 14th opening of her first major U.S. tour, on the road with fellow Def Jam artist August Alsina; then, the release of her eagerly anticipated debut album VII on October 21st; followed by, the premiere of “The Start Up,” BET’s new scripted comedy series (airdates tba) in which Teyana co-stars with Diggy Simmons and Bria Murphy.
“Maybe,” the first advance music from VII, impacted at Urban radio yesterday as Teyana returned to BET’s 106 & Park as a guest co-host. Tonight she travels to DC for a live performance at powerhouse Washington station Radio 1 DC (93.9 FM). The video for “Maybe” is coming soon.
Next week, Teyana joins August Alsina on his Testimony Live Tour, which is also the first major headlining U.S. tour of the New Orleans singer’s career. The 21-city schedule opens August 14th at the Showbox in Seattle, and wraps up at the Arvest Bank Theatre in Kansas City on September 21st. (Please see complete tour dates below.)
Following the release of her debut album VII, BET will launch “The Start Up,” in which hip-hop prince Diggy Simmons makes his scripted series debut as Blake Monroe, founder of TheJetsetters.com, an entertainment and lifestyle blog. From executive producers Mara Brock Akil, Salim Akil (The Game, Being Mary Jane) and Kenya Barris (Soul Food, Girlfriends), “The Start Up” hones in on what it means to be young, gifted and digital, as Blake and his friends (including Teyana) strategize for fame and financing while they navigate the freedoms and pressures of adulthood.
In 2013 Teyana, in association with adidas Originals, disrupted the boys’ sneaker world with the release of the women’s Harlem GLC silhouette, an exclusive color way with statement making details. In addition to its unique design points, the inside of each shoe bore a personal quote from Teyana: “I’m From A Planet Called Harlem, Where Dreams Do Come True.” With her tomboy-driven style, puffy-haired beauty Teyana inspired the return of the sneaker girl, combining street wear style with feminine sexy, paying tribute to her love for retro basketball sneakers. Due to her massive appeal, the Harlem GLC silhouette sold out within 10 minutes of the nationwide release. Thanks to the colossal success of her sneakers, Teyana has also created a woman’s clothing line, Unborthered for Taylor’d & Bow, which she will be showcasing in Las Vegas for PROJECT MVMNT later this month and during NY Fashion Week. In addition, Teyana recently partnered with the hair company My Exstensionz to release a hair line inspired by her signature curls named Taylor’d Textures.
23-year old Teyana released her debut mixtape in early 2012, The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor, which immediately spun off a pair of hot tracks:“DUI” featuring fellow Def Jam artists Fabolous and Jadakiss; and “Make Your Move” featuring Wale. The mixtape paid homage to Teyana’s classic ’80s and ’90s R&B influences, including Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, and especially Lauryn Hill. Prior to that, Teyana shook up the Internet and Twitter world with her cover of Drake’s “Marvin’s Room,” dubbed “Her Room.” Teyana closed out 2011 as the opening act for The Game’s European “Red Tour.”
Before joining 21-time Grammy Award®-winner Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music roster, Teyana began as a protégé of Pharrell Williams, signed at age 15 to his Startrak/Interscope label (a division of Universal Music Group). Starting with her extravagant, ’80s-themed coming out party on MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16,” and as the petite pop locker in Jay-Z’s “Blue Magic” video, Teyana has maintained an active profile on the pop music scene. In addition to singing on Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album, Teyana has collaborated on projects with a Who’s Who of A-listers, among them Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Willow Smith, Jadakiss, Cam’ron, Jim Jones, and Beyoncé, to name a few.
On the big screen, Teyana’s sassy style was seen in Stomp the Yard 2 (2010) opposite Columbus Short and Keith David. Her breakout appearance took place in Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family. Other films include Gang of Roses 2 with Rocsi Diaz (Entertainment Tonight) and Amber Rose; The Love Section with Mekhi Phifer; and Brotherly Love with Keke Palmer. Teyana’s countless magazine covers and spreads include VIBE,Teen Vogue, Nylon, Giant, Fader, Rap-Up,TRACE, Paper, and the New York Post’s Page Six. She has strut the runway at the Diesel Fashion Show for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, The Lady Cavi runway show for Macy’s, and for high fashion designer Zac Posen on BET’s “Rip The Runway.”
