Indie-pop artist Phoebe Ryan has teamed up with Kaskade and LöKii to release the delicate, hopeful break up anthem “Almost Back” today via Columbia Records – check out the neon-laced official lyric video above.
“I was just getting out of a relationship when I first heard the demo of ‘Almost Back,’ and it really hit me hard,” Phoebe says. “I was struggling to move on. Years of being together all of a sudden evaporated into nothing and it never feels fair and all it does is hurt. What I love about this song is when I’m listening to it, I feel like I’m taking care of myself. It’s like a bubble bath after crying all day. It’s bittersweet but really empowering.”
Kaskade adds: “Working on ‘Almost Back’ with LöKii bent us toward this pop landscape that is both fun and feels good, which is kind of a fake-out because it’s a pretty sad song. Phoebe came in and just put these angelic vocals over it and completely nailed the sort of painful – but more importantly, hopeful – sentiment of what it’s all about.” LöKii says “We all brought slightly different styles to the process but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of collaging these into the record.”
“Almost Back” is the first release since Phoebe’s previous James EP last fall, which included the dreamy “James Has Changed,” the irresistible kiss-off gem “Forgetting All About You” featuring blackbear, moody track “Be Real,” “Should I,” and “Aspirin.”
