The American Music Awards, Saturday Night Live, and RE-CLASSIFIED cap an astounding breakout year for Iggy Azalea. The final week in May, she had the rare distinction of holding the top two chart spots in the country, with “Fancy”exploding at #1 (certified RIAA 4x-platinum, with over 317 million combined YouTube views to date), and “Problem” at #2 (also certified RIAA 4x-platinum, with over 310 million combined YouTube views).
Iggy’s road to success extends back to her debut album release-day appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America, and the kick-off of the 15-city “Hip Hop Outbreak 2014 Tour,” presented by Monster Energy, Idol Roc Entertainment and Live Nation. Along the way, Iggy performed at theBillboard Music Awards tv special in Las Vegas, and played an extended set at the outdoor stage of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live in Hollywood. Appearances followed on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars and E! network’s Chelsea Lately. These built on earlier tv dates on ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers.
At the Billboard Music Awards gala, Iggy won the Breakout Star Of the Year Award, with “Fancy” winning Favorite #1 Hot 100 Song and Best Music Video, and “Problem” winning as the night’s Best Televised Performance. “Problem” also won the MTV VMA for Best Pop Video of the year. Iggy was a triple-winner at FOX’s Teen Choice Awards, as Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Artist, with “Fancy” winning Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Song, and “Problem” winning Choice Single Female Artist.
Iggy, who turned 24 in June, is “the only star to appear on two hits that have what every summer song needs,” wrote Jim Farber in New York’s Daily News, “the attitude, sex appeal and catchiness to serenade everyone’s summer parties and flings… That one-two punch has some observers referring to Azalea as this year’s Pharrell.”
