#ICYMI: Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Nearly Dead From Alcohol

Video Still from: Sum 41’s “Fat Lip” Music Video

Things haven’t been going so well for Sum 41 Rocker Deryck Whibley. On May 16th 34 year old Whibley announced to the world through his blog that he has “hit rock bottm”, and revealed that he nearly died of alcoholism. This reportedly caused him to need hospitalization for a month.

Whibley went on to explain that his liver and kidneys “collapsed” after his “hard boozing” habits “finally caught up” to him, and said that the traumatic experience “scared me straight.”

“i finally realized i can’t drink anymore,” he wrote. “if i have one drink the doc’s say i will die. i’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. i didn’t, and look where that got me. (i never thought i would ever say that! haha)”

The day after this announcement went public his ex-wife, pop star Avril Lavigne tweeted words of support for him. Lavigne, who is now married to Chad Kroger of the band  Nickelback’s tweeted, “Spoke to @Sum41 Deryck today,” “I am so proud of him. He is family to me and always will be. #StayStrongDeryck.”

Deryck’s fiancée Jocelyn Aguiler is also showing love, being by his side giving her support. Despite the set back, we hope that recovery will lead to bigger and better things for Whibley. He’s already been quoted saying, “I already have a few song ideas for new songs. soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again.”

We wish him the best with both his recovery, and the new music. Deryck Whibley and his band Sum 41 rose to fame in 2001 because of songs like “Fat Lip”, and their platinum selling album All Killer, No Filler.  It is a standout example of one of the best pop-punk albums of its era.
