Music and comedy fans alike need to make note and set their DVR machine of choice to record the highly anticipated season finale of  Saturday Night Live.  Season 36 of the NBC comedy staple will be capped  off with  Justin Timberlake on hosting duties and feature Lady Gaga as the musical guest.  Not only do we find this cool because the show will revolve around two of the music biz’s most respected and accomplished artists, but SNL fans know that Timberlake has regularly gone out of his way to also innovatively contribute to the show  as a comedic performer.

Perhaps his most memorable  contribution is when he joined Andy Samberg of SNL’s “Lonely Island” comedy trio to make the digital short viral sensation “D**k In A Box. ” After the music video was aired as part of the December 16th 2006 episode of SNL, the short was viewed over 35.3 million times, and prompted a notable amount of calls to NBC by the Parent’s Television Council.

Like with most things, the controversy only further cemented JT into the SNL universe, making him seen by fans as somewhat of an honorary cast member. Whether through memorable cameos or hosting, duties, the 30 year old pop star has made his presence felt on the SNL stage at least 9 times, not including his early career with *N Sync.  Timberlake’s frequent involvement has gotten him his own recurring characters and helped boost the careers  of the “D**k in a box” creative team”The Lonely Island”. In part, Timberlake’s participation told the music world, that doing a video with the then SNL new comers was not only going to be funny, but it would also be a hit seen by millions. Therefore any artists that takes part in these new web friendly approaches to an SNL comedy sketch come away from it looking cooler then they were before.

This cool factor can be seen most by looking at the careers of the “D**k In A Box” creators.  The trio gained house hold recognition, and were able expand by branching into the music business for themselves.  The popularity of “D**k In Box”, spun The Lonely Isand’s skits off into a full fledged  album entitled Incredabad from Universal Republic Rec0rds Group. It not only featured  Timberlake, but  Jack Black, (also known for music based comedy in his duo Tenacious D,) and Rapper/Producer T-Pain, who joined the guys on their Grammy nominated hit “I’m On A Boat”. Incredablad Opened  SNL up to a whole new audience, and made Lonely Island into the rock stars of comedy.

Incredibad became so popular that it inspired their follow up album Turtleneck & Chain, which was released last week. Capitalizing on what worked for  Incredabad, Turtleneck and Chain is littered with even more celebrity appearances. Some of the big names include,Akon,  Rihanna, Snoop Dogg,, Nicki Minaj, Michael Bolton, Beck, and you guessed it, Justin Timberlake. The album’s current single is the hilarious song “Jack Sparrow”, based on Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean, well sort of.
