Lass Vegas Alternative Rock band, The Killers has released their first Christmas EP this year! The EP is simply, (Red) Christmas EP. On The surface the title appears to have a basic name related to the colors of the season, however that title has a very special meaning behind it. Since 2006 The Killers have contributed part of the sales of a yearly Christmas single to the Product Red campaign founded by U2’s Bono and current mayor of Santa Monica, Bobby Shriver.
For those of you who do not already know, Product Red, or (Red) was founded in 2006, and is a brand that is dedicated in raising awareness and funds to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is the recipient of (RED) brand proceeds. Bono is an active public spokesperson for the brand. Didier Drogba is also a spokesperson for the brand and is the face of the Nike (RED) Laces campaign. Each partner company creates a product with the Product Red logo. In return for the opportunity to increase its own revenue through the Product Red products that it sells, a percentage of the profit is given to the Global Fund. Other Partners who license the (Red) brand include American Express, Apple Inc., Starbucks, Converse, Bugaboo, Penguin Classics (UK & International), Gap, Emporio Armani, Hallmark (US) and Dell. The Killers’ (Red) Christmas EP is a compilation of all the singles the band recorded for (Red), and it also includes this year’s new Christmas single, “The Cowboy’s Christmas Ball.”
The lyrics of the song were taken from the 1890 poem of the same name by William Lawrence Chittenden with some slight changes by the band. The song was first released by Island Records on November 30th with the video that followed on December 1st. All sales of “The Cowboys’ Christmas Ball” go to the (Red) campaign.
