Despite having massive success together with, Justified in 2002, Justin Timberlake and former frequent collaborating producers, The Nepyunes have gone their separate ways in the music industry for many years. Timberlake’s discography has grown with the help of Timbaland, Danja and his own productions, and The Neptunes’ Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams have been focussing on the development of their label, Star Trak, and its star, Robin Thicke. Although Timberlake and The Neptunes had worked together often in the eraly 2000’s, they have not collaborated together since the song “Signs” from Snoop Dogg’s, R&G Rhythm & Gangsta album in 2004. “Signs’ was released as a single and music video in 2005, but The Neptunes and JT have not gotten to work together officially since.
However it seems the old hit making team is getting back together for one of the most surprising reasons. California rapper, The Game has re-signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath/Interscope Records, after leaving during his fued with 50 Cent. (50 Cent & Dr. Dre had originally jointly released The Game’s debut on G-Unit/Aftermath/Interscope) Even though the album is in fact on Aftermath, Game is taking a page out of Robin Thicke and Snoop Dogg’s playbook by having The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams executive produce the entire album. The first single is as if it came out of a time capsule from 2003. “Ain’t No Doubt About It” reunites Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams on guest singing vocals that surround Game’s Rap verses. Timberlake and Williams are in fact performing on a majority of the song, with Justin even singing background behind some of Game’s lyrics. The song sounds as if if belongs on The Neptunes’ old 2003 compilation album, The Neptunes Presents: The Closnes. (Justin was asked to appear as guest on that album but never made the album) It is one of The Game’s most radio friendly singles to date and is an exciting reinvention for him. It is also nice to see Justin hook back up with Pharrell, someone who helped shape JT’s vocal sound during his budding solo career as an R&B singer.
The Game’s album which became, The R.E.D. Album is due for release on June 29th via Aftermath/Inrterscope Records. Game has said to have recorded songs for the album with the likes of, Nelly Furtado, Jim Jones Ray J, Rick Ross, Jadakiss and Robin Thicke.
