Shawn transitioned from teen viral online sensation to full-fledged industry best-seller when he scored back-to-back #1 iTunes smashes in July, first with “Life of The Party” (which vaulted to the top spot less than one hour after its release), and then with his self-titled 4-songTHE SHAWN MENDES EP (which took over the iTunes #1 position in less than 30 minutes). The EP went #1 on the iTunes charts in 14 countries (including Canada, Mexico, Norway, Spain, and Sweden) and went #5 on iTunes in the UK.
“Life of The Party” kicks off the EP, which also includes “Show You,” “One Of Those Nights,” and “The Weight,” all of which were co-written by Shawn. With over 150,000 first week single sales for “Life of The Party”, Shawn became the youngest artist ever to break the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 25 with their first chart entry. In the 24 hours following the release and #1 chart debut of “Life of The Party,” there were over 2 million mentions of the single on Twitter, skyrocketing it to the #1 position on Billboard‘s Twitter Music charts. The song went on to jump inside the iTunes Top 5 in 28 other countries (including UK, Brazil, Sweden and Norway) and Top 10 in 38 countries.
In July, Shawn performed live on the FOX 5 morning television show Good Day New York, and ABC’s Good Morning America, Live with Kelly & Michael, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!. He also performed on and was interviewed by Ellen. On July 25th, Shawn began his first major tour engagement, on the road across the U.S. and Canada with Austin Mahone’s Secret Tour. Dates run through September, co-starring Island label mates The Vamps.
In less than one year since he first began using the digital platform Vine to record himself singing covers, Shawn Mendes has become today’s most buzzed-about young artist. In late 2013, over 2,000 fans showed up to the Canadian native’s first public appearance in Toronto’s Dundas Square, and his first headline show in Toronto sold out in under 24 hours. In January 2014, artist manager Andrew Gertler discovered Shawn online after finding his cover of A Great Big World’s song “Say Something” on YouTube, and brought it to the attention of his now-label Island Records.
Shawn, who turned 16 on August 8th, has accumulated over 18 million YouTube views as his clips have spread across Vine (over 3 million followers), YouTube ( 800,000 subscribers), Instagram (over 2 million followers), Twitter (over 1.8 million followers), Facebook (over 485,462 likes), and every online social outlet imaginable. Heading into the summer, Shawn is just getting started, writing and recording his own music, and growing into one of our brightest new stars.
