ICYMI: Selena Gomez All Grown Up: A Second Look At Her “V” Magazine Cover

Selena Gomez On “V” Magazine Cover

Pop star and actress, Selena Gomez is baring all physically and emotionally in the latest issue of V Magazine. In case you missed it, Selena is getting a lot of attention, thanks to her sexy new look seen in the photo shoot from the article alone. That’s because the one time Disney Channel star is posing topless with her arms intentionally folded to hide the side of her escaping cleavage. The cover photo has raised some eyebrows, because some of the gossip blogs began to point the finger at the V Magazine editors, claiming that they intentionally tried to make her look like an underage girl. However, when you step back and look at the situation, and take it all in, the sexy photos really do make a bold statement in ways that aren’t always initially thought of upon first view.

It is important to remember that even though she still looks like that baby-faced young girl we watched grow up on Disney, Selena is now grown 22 year old woman. It can be argued that the with her being in the place that she is right now, that the photos have a much deeper meaning, even if they are just appear sexy on the surface. This is because of what was said in the interview inside the issue.. The cover story’s title is named after her hit song, “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” a song that was very overtly about her emotional break up with Pop star turned bad boy, Justin Bieber. This is aptly titled, because the subject of the break up was addressed in a candid way unlike any other time before. When reflecting on her relationship with Justin, Selena had this to say.

“I think the next time will be much different … which will definitely not be any time soon,” she said. “That’s a growing up kind of thing. I was 18-years-old, and it was my first love. The older I get, I’m guarding certain things more. After being put through the scrutiny, I understand what it is. When you’re young and you’re being told so many different things … it almost felt like all we had was each other, like the world was against us, in a way. It was really weird, but it was incredible. I would never take it back in a million years. You live and you learn, you know” She continued by talking about how the break up affected her.

“There were a few months where I was a little depressed, where I wouldn’t leave [the house] as much,” continued Selena, “I think I drove myself crazy for a little bit. It was just easier to say, ‘Hey, do you mind running to the grocery store and picking some stuff up, I don’t want to get photographed.’”

It is important to note that Selena was able to answer this honestly because of trust she had in the interviewer. Rather than have a staff writer try and get a scoop with her, V Magazine tried something different by allowing Academy Award nominated actor, James Franco to interview her. Selena not only sees Fanco as a peer, but he is a friend as well. The two first worked together in the 2012 film, Spring Breakers. That movie was also a platform that allowed Selena to stretch her creative muscles, as it was her first R-rated film with dark subject matter. For any readers who may not know, Franco is also an accomplished film producer, director, and professor that taught at USC, UCLA, CalArts and NYU in their Film and English departments.

The honesty and layers to Selena and Franco’s conversation really could allow the reader to make the argument that on a second look, the topless photos, are meant to have a double meaning of being both vulnerable and sexy at the same time. After all, going through a break up is something we all can relate to, and just like the honesty seen/heard in her music video for “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” Selena is just being human. What’s more human than seeing her embrace the woman she has become?

Many Selena Gomez fans would agree with us when we say that she has always conducted herself with maturity beyond her years. As a child actress that started out on, Barney And Friends, that later was able to transition to a presence with the Disney Channel, and doing various projects with Walt Disney Records, Selena was able to gracefully pass various milestones in entertainment, before breaking through as a “Pop star” with hits like “Who Says”, and “Come And Get It.” With each step taken, she has projected the image of a well-adjusted and humble performer who continued to grow. As she closes a chapter of her career with the ending of her deal with Disney Music Group’s, Hollywood Records, we only hope that she enters her new deal with Interscope Records with the same kind of excitement, positivity, and drive that made fans look up to her. We wish you all the best Selena! “The Heart Wants What It Wants” can be found on Selena’s album, For You, Selena’s first greatest hits album, and her last album on Hollywood Records She recently collaborated with her new boyfriend, and Interscope label mate, Zedd on his upcoming new single, “I Want YouTo Know.” Stay tuned for details on that song coming very soon!
