Sam Smith Pays Tribute To Whitney Houston In Recent Performance

Sam Smith on Sirius SM

R&B/Pop star, Sam Smith is the latest UK soul singer to make a major impact here in the states. Ever since American listeners were first introduced to his voice on Disclosure’s hit “Latch” in the spring, his debut solo album, In The Lonely Hour has become more and more highly anticipated prior to its recent release on June 17th! However today Sam is in the news, not for his own music, but for paying tribute to someone else’s. Last week while stopping by Sirius XM’s Sirius Hits One studio, Sam paid tribute to the legendary Whitney Houston. He gave an awesome performance of Whitney’s 1985 hit, “How Will I know.” In that performance Sam flips the meaning of the song to give it a more stripped down interpretation on the piano.  This is done in the smooth style of his current single, “Stay With Me,” which was also re-released as a duet with American R&B icon, Mary J. Blige.

Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” was released as the third official single from her self-titled debut album. It was one of 4 singles that helped that album sell over 13 million copies in the US and help introduce Whitney’s incomparable voice to the world. “How Will I Know” topped the Billboard Hot 100, R&B/Hip Hop and Adult Contemporary charts simultaneously. Much of the song’s massive appeal was thanks to it’s heavy rotation on MTV, a first for an black female singers at the time.
