Robin Thicke And Wife Paula Patton Announce That They Are Separating

Robin Thicke & Paula Patton At The 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Unfortunately, we have to report the very sad news that Robin Thicke and his wife Paula Patton have decided to separate after nearly 10 years of marriage.  The news was broken today through an exclusive statement that was given to People Magazine.

“We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time”

While many gossip blogs are saying that they’re not surprised because of an array of things that happened associated with the craziness that was “Blurred Lines,” we were extremely surprised to hear this news. The couple have known each other since they were teens, and Robin has always made his marriage the muse for the overwhelming majority of the songs in his discography. In fact, his breakthrough hit “Lost Without U”  shows that very clearly both in the song and its music video, which features him doting over his wife, who stars in the video with him.

In a sense the song  and its video held them up  as the personification of a happy couple with a  long established relationship, built on a rarely achieved lasting passion and understanding for one another. That sincerity struck a chord with the foundation of his original fan base of young adult Black women, who showed their appreciation for his message by  pushing the track to the number 1 spot on Billboard’s Urban chart for 16 weeks in 2007.  That success set the narrative pace for his image and sound, and allowed him to have the career he’d been striving for since he was 16 years old.

Perhaps the saddest part of today’s news is the fact that this same narrative is echoed in his Blurred Lines album cut called “4 The Rest OF My Life”, which chronicles his courting of Puala approximately 20 years ago. It’s a beautiful track, and has always been one of our personal favorites. You can hear him talk about his marriage and family in our 2011 “Love After War” interview here.
