Relive Outkast’s Historic Reunion Performance At This Weekend’s Coachella Music Festival

Outkast Live At Coachella Music Festival

It seems like the surprises from this past weekend’s Coachella Music Festival seem to get bigger and bigger every year. With surprise reunion collaborations between Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams, as well as a impromptu dance off between Beyonce with her sister, Solounge, the surprises couldn’t get much bigger than that right? Wrong! Without a doubt the biggest and most exciting surprise of the entire weekend had to be the highly anticipated reunion of Atlanta Hip Hop legends, Outkast!

That’s right after nearly 8 years apart and much speculation of never getting back together; Big Boi and Andre 3000 shared the stage at Coachella for over an hour and a half of classic hits. Half way through the set they were joined bt Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon protégé turned star in her own right, Janelle Monae. Monae joined them to perform her own hit, “Tightrope” that Big Boi is featured on. After that she took time to enjoy the moment by saying  “I wanna say that this is my favourite group in the world, and what you’re witnessing right now is history.” Other guests like their frequent collaborator, Sleepy Brown, and rapper, Future, also joined the duo during the set.

One music icon was on hand to witness the set, and did not join the duo on stage. However that person’s presence meant so much to them that Andre had to be sure to shout him out.

“One of my idols is backstage tonight,” he said. “Prince. Prince right over there right now, no joke!.”

It was good of Prince not to take the spotlight away from the ATLiens, they are music idols in their own right. Before their hiatus in 2007, Outkast left the music world on top. Before parting ways the group’s last release, 2003’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was a blockbuster hit. It was the best selling album of that  year, with over 11 million copies sold. It was also the only the second of two Hip Hop/Rap albums to win the “Album Of The Year” Grammy Award. (The First was Laryn Hill’s The Miseducation Of Laryn Hill in 1999)

Take a look at Outkast’s historic Coachella performance, and take a moment to remind yourself of the special sound these two have together!
