“Queen Of Disco” Donna Summer Dies Of Lung Cancer At 63

The Queen Of Disco Donna Summer died this morning, losing her battle with lung cancer at age 63 years old. The singer died early Thursday morning in Florida. Sources Close to TMZ.com who broke the news said

“the singer was trying to keep the extent of her illness under wraps, and was focused on trying to finish up an album she had been working on.” Several sources are beginning to report that Donna believed she contracted it by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attack in New York City.

The singer’s family has released a statement confirming her death, stating they are “at peace celebrating her extraordinary life.”

“Early this morning, surrounded by family, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith. While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy,” her family said through her publicist. Summer is survived by husband Bruce Sudano, their two children and a daughter from her previous marriage.

Donna Summer, born LaDonna Adrian Gaines was an unstoppable force in Pop, R&B and Disco The five time Grammy winning singer/song writer shot to super stardom as part of the Disco era with iconic hits like “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls.” Her star continued to rise throughout the 1980s with “She Works Hard for the Money” and “This Time I Know It’s for Real.” Summer made history by becoming the first female to win a Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female (1979, “Hot Stuff”) as well as the first-ever recipient of the Grammy for Best Dance Recording (1997, “Carry On”). In 2004, she became one of the first inductees, as both an Artist Inductee and a Record Inductee (1977’s “I Feel Love”) into the Dance Music Hall of Fame
