Phil Collins, Samples, Soul Music, and Retirement

Phil Colins Go Back

When it comes to making quality music, Phil Collins not only stands the the test of time, but has undeniably influenced the musical soul of younger artists for several generations.  Already known for performing with the widest variety of music royalty, he has been able to balance his place in music stardom with serving as an example to those following him. Despite fame the world over  Collins remains more “down” then artists half his age.  Thanks to his signature percussion based instrumentation found in songs like, “In The Air Tonight,”Phil has added a crucial soul element to the flow of hip hoppers like, DMX, Nas, 2Pac, Jim Jones, Wale, Sean Kingston and many more.  Simply put, he’s been sampled by your favorite rappers’ favorite rapper.

With his legend firmly established, he is now consciously choosing to draw his illustrious career to a close, and he is doing so by taking a page out from the many rappers that have respectfully borrowed his music for years.  For what is reported to be  his final album, 2010’s  Going Back, Phil will be borrowing the greatness of the 60s R&B stars that came before him, performing a variety of 18 classics that music fans of any age will love. Unlike his many samplers though, it isis not his plan to add any new flavor to it

“The idea behind the album. not to bring anything ‘new’ to these already great records, but to try to recreate the sounds and feelings that I had when I first heard them. My intention was to make an ‘old’ record, not a ‘new’ record ”

Most likely this need for nostalgia and road to retirement stems from Collins’ loss of hearing in his right ear caused by a viral infection, and a dislocated vertebrae in his neck making him unable to do the drumming that made him famous.  Hardships aside, we are sure to be in for a treat!  Phil Collins already has a knack for making a smash out of classic covers.  This is most notable with his UK number 1 hit version of “You Can’t Hurry Love” by the Supremes.    He will begin promotionally touring key cities of the US to prepare for the album’s Atlantic Records release on September 13th in the US and the UK.
