For those of you who did not see, Nicki Minaj finally released the video for her song “Fly” featuring Rihanna. The video was first previewed on MTV’s 2011 Video Music Awards pre-show on August 28th. It is the 8th single released off Nicki’s debut album, Pink Friday.  But hardcore Nicki fans may already know that the video for “Fly” has been in the can since January. Even though the video has been complete for many months, Nicki made it clear that she intended to release the song as a single when Rihanna’s promotion for her current album, Loud began to wind down.

Nicki was right to do so! Rihanna kicked off 2011 in a big way, still hot off Eminem’s hit, “Love The Way You Lie.”  Loud  was also in heavy in heavy rotation on various radio formats thanks to the album’s hits like “Only Girl In The World”, and “What’s My Name” featuring Drake already commanding a lot of attention. 2011 moved forward and Rihanna’s hot streak just kept going. She released 5 more singles to promote that album (“S&M,” “S&M Remix featuring Britney Spears, “California King Bed,” “Man Down” and most recently”Cheers (Drink To That)” ) Rihanna was also able to take the success of the album, and spin it into a very successful tour as well.

Nicki was very much aware of all the attention Rihanna was getting, and wanted to release the single she had with her on it at a time when it would stand alone as more of a special collaboration. Nicki talked to MTV about this idea.

“So she has a lot of songs in rotation and I want to let her stuff have a moment and do its thing, dominate radio. Instead, I wanted to come out with something more fun.” The release schedule worked out perfectly in Nicki’s favor anyway. As Pink Friday continued to gain more and more popularity, one of the songs that was originally intended to be nothing more than an album bonus track was growing into a viral sensation. That song was, “Super Bass”. It is an upbeat flirty and fun tune that had everyone’s attention. It was even being covered online for fun by Country/Pop star, Taylor Swift, and Disney Channel star/singer, Selena Gomez. Eventually “Super Bass was released as the 7th official single from Pink Friday.

Now the time has finally come for Nicki to let the video for “Fly” out of the vault. It was directed by Sanaa Hamri, who also worked with Nicki on “Super Bass.” Its interesting to see the video for the song being released now, considering the impact it had when MTV producers used the uplifting song on the end credits of her MTV special. From the first phrase that Rihanna sang over the credits, “I Came to win, to fight, to fight, to conquer, to thrive,” it was an instant fan favorite. It is songs like this that shows how smart Nicki Minaj is, and shows she is not just your average female rapper. MTV Networks had the exclusive premiere of the video, but for those who haven’t seen it, take a look!
