Now that Matchbox Twenty’s current single, “She’s So Mean” has given the band yet another top 10 hit on the Adult Top 40 chart, the guys are ready to change the mood up with the new track from their North album. This one is a stripped down acoustic mid tempo track called, “Overjoyed.” Just like “She’s So Mean”, the song’s title speaks volume about the song’s subject matter. It is a song that finds words to describe the universal feelings of true love that grow stronger as time goes by. The song’s lyrical composition does its best to articulate the things that timeless wedding songs are made of, while the song’s “Official Audio Video” puts the perfect visuals to them. That video on the band’s official YouTube, channel follows a couple’s courtship from meeting in their childhood in grade school, only to see their friendship blossom into love, as we see the couple get engaged, and then married. This is all done in a very fluid style of editing that keeps your attention the entire time.
The video open’s with an older man beginning to place a needle on a record when the song’s music starts from a record player. It is then that the video’s theme starts. From the instant that the record begins to spin forward, the scene in the room begins to spin backwards, taking the video’s characters back through time. From that point on we get to see the family that stars in this touching video go back through different stages of their lives, only to reveal, with the help of special effects, that the root of that family and its love begins when a young guy and girl fell in love back in their ealier days. Once that point is realized , we as an audience then cycle back to their precent time, as the video’s symbolic use of paper air plane’s completes the symbolic circle that the record’s spinning started, drawling to a heartwarming end.
Like Jason Mraz did before them for his lyric video for, “I won’t Give Up”, Matchbox used their “Audio Video” that was originally meant to simply promote the audio of a new single, and expand it into playing a role of the song’s deeper message. It is truly touching, and in many ways serves as a fantasy image of what people in general seem to wish for themselves when it’s their turn to fall in love. It shouldn’t be missed. Watch it for yourself and see what you think.
