Independent Rap duo turned superstars, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis continue to make history with their smash hit album, The Heist. This time the guys hit the stage of Comedy Central’s, The Colbert Report yesterday to perform their gay marriage rights anthem, “Same Love” with featured singer Mary Lambert. This is significant because yesterday’s performance happened on the same day that civil unions became legal in the state of Colorado. As the song’s lyrics indicate, it’s subject matter comes from a very personal place for Macklemore. Its story and very powerful music video was inspired by growing up around his uncle who is a homosexual in a very loving committed relationship. It was originally released in support of legalizing same-sex marriage particularly in Macklemore’s home state of Washington. The song’s music video ends by promoting the approval of Washington’s Referendum 74, a Washington state referendum to approve or reject the February 2012 bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state.
Even though the duo’s song “Thrift Shop” is what is considered to be the group’s breakout hit, thanks to the massive support of Pop radio play, “Same Love” continues to be another song that helps Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ career get pushed to new heights. They first performed the song on TV as guests on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October of 2012, which was one of the duo’s first major TV appearances before the true impact of “Thrift Shop” Now that the group has been uplifted to mainstream status, “Same Love” will be the third single released to Pop radio in the near future. It will follow their current hit, “Can’t Hold Us”, which recently peaked at number one on the iTunes singles chart.
