Justin Timberlake Breaks The Rules In The UK By Topping The Charts With An 8 Minute Love Song To His Wife
Grammy Award and BRIT Award-winning artist, Justin Timberlake has topped the charts in the UK and Scotland with his new single “Mirrors!.” The song, which was produced by Timberlake, Timbaland, Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon, raced up the charts right after JT’s soulful performance of the tune on the 2013 Brit Awards last month in London. It has gotten a lot of praise from critics and fans alike, for it’s similar sound to the production heard on Timberlake’s blockbuster 2006 album, FutureSexLove/Sound. Plus many JT fans enjoy connecting with it, because sources close to JT have said that the lyrics in the song were inspired by his wife, Jessica Biel. However despite all the reasons for the great reactions toward the song, probably the most interesting, and even surprising part of “Mirrors’” success on radio in the UK, is the fact that the song’s running time clocks in at 8 minutes and 4 seconds.
Yes that’s right, due to the hype surrounding the release of his new music; the typical song time limits, and rules for radio air play seem to not apply to Justin this time around. “Mirrors’” chart success over seas, most likely comes as a surprise to both JT and his label RCA, who are still busy maximizing the exposure of “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay=Z. “Mirrors” was originally released digitally as a track available for download when JT’s new album, The 20/20 Experience was pre-ordered on ITunes. It is possible that RCA could have guessed that the song would chart moderately after JT’s BRIT Awards performance, but who would have guessed that the song would have worked enough at Pop radio to top the charts? When the song’s interlude is trimmed down, the running time still exceeds 5 minutes, and the shortened version performed on the BRIT Awards was even over 6 minutes also. With that said, it appears that the radio editing will be a common issue when picking singles from the album. This will be a challenge because when looking at The 20/20 Experiences’ track list, all of the songs run fairly long. 3 of the tracks on the album even run for 8 minutes and higher. (including “Mirrors”, “Pusher Love Girl, And “Strawberry Bubblegum”)
However, even if this may cause his record label to have to think a little harder, it appears that song time limits was the last thing on Justin’s mind when making the album. In an interview with Cameron Capers and Allison Spice from Grammy week that was profiled in Rolling Stone, Justin described his goal of making the songs on the album flow together.
“There are 10 songs on this one, (Standard Version) but the average length of each song is seven, eight minutes. We made it to listen from top to bottom. It’s not so much a narrative or a story, but sonically we really made it to listen from top to bottom.” Back in 2006 Justin brought sexy back, could it be, that in 2013, he is now bringing full albums back? Justin Timberlake’s third album, The 20/20 Experience will hit stores on March 18th in the UK, and March 19th in the USA from RCA Records.
