Gotye Doesn’t Like Glee

Gotye

Ever since 2009, music fans have enjoyed the famed glee club of Ohio’s fictional  Wiliam McKinley High School covering their favorite chart toppers of all types.  Whether they were covering standouts by Madonna, Fleetwood Mack, or our buddy Robin Thicke, many in the music community considered it an unspoken Christening of their track as a sign of success.  Therefore, it’s natural to assume  that although their rendition may be considered to be slightly corny at times, having the slurpy splashing  glee clubers put their twist on their tune is often warmly welcomed as a good luck charm.

Australian singer Gotye doesn’t appear to share that blessed feeling after he heard what the Fox show did to his hit “Somebody That I Used to Know.” He made the news this past weekend for admitting a personal frustration towards  Glee. He discussed those mixed feelings with multiple publications this this past weekend.

“They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop “Glee” style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense,” he told the Sunday Mail, “like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box.”

The 31 year old continued those sentiments when talking with the Herald Sun, ”It made it sound dinky and wrong.”

Hopefully he doesn’t feel too “dinky.”  Since the now infamous episode entitled Big Brother aired on April 10th, “Somebody I Use To Know” rose to the top of Billboard’s Top 100 singles chart, making him  the fourth Australian artist in history to sit at the top of the charts.  Although his song is the perfect example of artistic vision mixed into a well inculpated Pop song, sometimes a song needs the right kind of boost to reach its audience.  Whether Gotye likes it or not, Glee was that platform that allowed him to reach the heights of success that many artists dream of.

If it makes up for it at all, we absolutely adored your version from first listen, and have often expressed a disgust towards any remixes that were created and released in order to make the song more “marketable”.  We suggest that you compare the two, and see if you agree with us. Enjoy!
