French Montana And Nicki Minaj Debut Dancehall Inspired Video For “Freaks”

French Montana Featuring Nicki Minaj "Freaks" From: Excuse My French Maybach Music Group/Bad Boy/Interscope Records
Bad Boy Records Rapper French Montana is still going hard promoting the release of his major label debut album, Excuse My French. Last week Vevo released the music video for his current single, “Freaks” featuring Nicki Minaj. It features everything you’ve seen in a French Montana video, only this time it is dipped in the essence of the Jamaican club genre, Dancehall. It does every music video night club cliché in a way that can’t help but be enjoyed.
Many of you who are already familiar with the genre should be able to tell from first listen that the song is a clever blend of Dancehall classics, “Murder She Wrote” by Chaka Demus & Pliers, and Lil Vicious’ track which is similarly called “Freak.” “Freak” features American Hip Hop Pioneer Doug E. Fresh, who beat box’s on the track. Both songs went on to be relative crossover hits in the 1990s. They are considered by many to now be cult classics.
Clearly that significance wasn’t lost on Montana, Nicki, and the video’s director Eif Rivera. As soon as the credits introduce the song, we are shown a dance crew that is very obviously in the middle of doing a dance called the “Dutty Wine.” “Dutty Wine” is an island rooted form of night club popularized dancing that involves aggressive and exaggerated twisting of the neck and hips. If done in an extended form, it often goes on to include a variety of splits and thrusts up and down, with legs moving in a butterfly motion. It is mostly done by woman, and has gone on to influence Hip Hop night club dancing in the UK and North America.
Speaking as guys that have watched this dance for ourselves, it makes for great eye candy, and it is perfect for a video like this. Check it out below and see if you agree. “Freaks” follows the album’s first official single, “Pop That”, as well as several other promo videos/singles that were released to build up this highly anticipated album. They’re provided for you to check out below as well. French Montana’s Excuse My French album is currently set to be released some time this year.
