News broke over the weekend that former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh was found dead in his hotel room in Chicago. While that news is sad enough on its own, it is coupled with the odd coincidence that he took to Twitter only days before to announce a prediction of his death that matches the actual occurence to the date. On September 26th Welsh is quoted via Twitter saying, “dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep)”. “Need to write my will today.” Then Welsh quickly added: “correction – the weekend after next.”
Welsh joined Weezer in 1998 and ended up playing on hits like “Hashpipe”, and “Island In The Sun” off of the band’s Green Album in 2001. While still remaining close to the other members of Weezer, Welsh reportedly decided to leave the band after a series of nervous breakdowns. According to VH1 these potentially related symptoms that caused the breakdown were identified by Welsh himself in in a 2007 quote. “Basically, a lifetime of doing drugs and being undiagnosed as having disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder finally caught up with me when I was 30 years old”.
In response to his death Weezer’s reps Tweeted the band’s following reaction. “We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the awful news, our friend and fellow weez rocker @mikeywelsh71 has passed away. We love u Mikey.”.
Although cause of death has not been determined, police suspect that his death was due to a drug over dose. One can only hope that at the very least, now that he’s past way he can finally be at peace. Mikey Welsh was 40 years old. Rest In Peace.
