As we mentioned in an article post from back in June, Clizbeats Featured artist Asher Roth is making his return to the game with his second album, The Septette  Tree that is now preparing for release.  This time he trades in the college loving party anthem s for a more progressive unity oriented mind.  You may remember G.R.I.N.D, which stands for Get ready it’s a new day, was given away to the public for free as part of a special contest that will allow Asher’s fans to make their own videos for him, and inevitably spread the love of the song. You may not have heard BC Jean’s name, but you’ve probably heard her work. The San Diego-born singer and songwriter tells a poignant story of overcoming romantic betrayal on the song “If I Were A Boy,” which she co-wrote with producer Toby Gad. The track, which appears on Beyoncé’s I Am…Sasha Fierce album, became a chart-topping, multi-platinum hit for the megastar.

Jean’s powerful version will appear on her upcoming debut album to be released early 2011 (J Records), which the 22-year-old is currently completing after working with a host of top-notch collaborators including rock producers Howard Benson (The All-American Rejects, My Chemical Romance), Brian Howes (Daughtry, David Cook), Zac Maloy (David Cook, Jason Castro), and pop hitmakers The Matrix (Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera), Ryan Tedder (Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Beyoncé) and Max Martin (Katy Perry, Pink). The result is a sparkling collection of edgy, rock-pop sing-alongs and touching balladry that paints an appealing portrait of this vibrant, young talent.

“If I Were A Boy”

The daughter of a piano and trumpet-playing stockbroker father and a talent manager mother, Jean comes from a musical family. Her grandparents, in addition to being painters, were also singers and actors who appeared on such television variety programs as The Perry Como Show and The Fred Waring Show in the 1950’s. Jean fell in love with music from a young age. “My favorite song was ‘She Drives Me Crazy’ by Fine Young Cannibals,” she says. “I would get up on our coffee table, use a lamp as a spotlight, and put on shows for my parents. When they were sick of me, I would set up my cats and dogs, stuffed animals, and Barbies as an audience and perform for them. And I would make my friends be my back-up singers,” she recalls with a laugh.

At age 14, Jean, who played piano, began converting the poetry she was writing into song lyrics. “I listened to No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom, Britney Spears, and Alanis Morrissette and wrote down all of the lyrics to figure out how the songs were constructed,” she says, “that’s how I taught myself.” She also fell in love with the rock records her parents were listening to, albums by Aerosmith, Queen, Heart, and Rod Stewart. In high school, Jean began singing with a San Diego cover band that performed everything from Madonna and Eminem hits to old-time rock and roll and country songs. Her first live show with them was at The Sahara Casino in Las Vegas at age 15. “It was really great because it gave me stage experience and taught me how to sing harmonies. But I wanted to write and perform my own music.”

Jean convinced her mother to move with her to Los Angeles and began collaborating with various songwriters and producers who lived in her apartment complex in the San Fernando Valley. “I worked with this one producer and we recorded in a tiny closet in his apartment. I was drenched in sweat, with one leg here and one arm there trying to sing the high notes,” she recalls. Jean kept writing and making demos until one day she read an article about songwriter/producer Toby Gad in Recording Magazine and decided to send him a message through MySpace. Gad, who has worked with Fergie and The Veronicas, wrote her back and asked for a meeting. Next thing Jean knew, the two were writing songs together in New York, which is where “If I Were A Boy,” was created.

Yes Its true, after over a year of being his very successful Island Def Jam label mate, Justin Bieber has had his dream of working with Kanye West come true. West’s remix of Bieber’s song “Runaway Love” made its way online yesterday. Bieber’s vocals are the originals from My World 2.0 , while Kanye puts his stamp on it in a way only he can. As the producer of the song West sampled Wu-Tang Clan’s 1993 breakout hit, “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthin’ To F*** Wit.” Kanye continues the Wu-Tang Clan theme of the remix by referencing Wu-Tang in his verses and even allowing Wu member, Raekwon to rap two verses. Talk of Kanye collaborating with Raekwon began earlier this month in interviews with MTV.com.

Guitar legend in Rock and Pop music, Carlos Santana is returning to the music biz strong with his eleventh solo album, Guitar Heaven: Santana Performs the Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time. The set is exactly what the title implies it to be, a collection of 13 cover songs of some major guitar driven tunes. It is due for release on September 21st, from Arista/RCA Records. It is executive produced by the team behind Santana’s latest genre bending projects like Supernatural, Clive Davis and Carlos Santana himself. While Clive and Carlos will co-produce, the album tracks will also be produced by Matt Serletic and Howard Benson. Even though the album is technically a solo album for Carlos, he is by no means doing this alone. Like his blockbuster album, Supernatural before it, each one of these captivating covers will featur a different vocalist adding their own flavor to Santana’s guitar. The track list and guests to appear on the tracks are as follows.

The first single from the album is one of the few Beatles songs written by George Harrison, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” originally from, The White Album.  Santana’s version features the soothing sounds of soul singer, India Arie and Yo-Yo Ma. Take a listen

 “Not That Far Away” is the title track of Jennette’s EP that has been released digitally and is now available on iTunes.  Jennette co-wrote three of the four tracks on the EP including the title track which she wrote with Rachel Proctor and Blair Daly.  All of the tracks were produced by Paul Worley (Lady Antebellum). The video for “Not That Far Away” recently made its World Premiere on CMT and Nickelodeon and can be viewed on Jennette’s official site www.jennettemccurdy.com.

Jennette McCurdy is an energetic young artist with the drive, talent and creative chutzpah it takes to turn dreams into reality. Already a successful actress with a legion of fans who know her as the sassy Sam Puckett on the Nickelodeon TV series iCarly, McCurdy is also a gifted singer/songwriter who has long wanted to launch a career in country music.

“It’s always been my favorite,” enthuses the petite blonde. “I found that I could relate to it more than any other genre and I felt like it was so honest.  It told stories like nothing else and it spilled everything right out on the table. There’s hardly a country song that plays that doesn’t make you smile and want to dance or want to make you have a tear trickling down your cheek, so for country music to evoke those kinds of emotions, I guess that’s what drew me towards it.”

McCurdy grew up in Garden Grove, a family-friendly Southern California town. “People think every place in California has got bright lights and big buildings,” says McCurdy, admitting her hometown has a decidedly more country feel. “We lived in a little corner house that’s blue and white.  We had eight people in the house growing up.  My grandparents lived with us, mom and dad, my three big brothers and myself. I always remembered my grandma walking around the house singing Patsy Cline songs.”

McCurdy grew up with an appreciation for the classics, but also a love for Rascal Flatts, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Keith Urban and other contemporary country acts whose music provided the soundtrack for her childhood. “I was into Faith Hill when ‘Breathe’ came out. I love that song,” she says. “When I was seven, I actually did a music video where I played her daughter and was able to talk to her and see how nice she is. She really encouraged me at a young age.”

By the time she was eight, McCurdy was writing songs and recording them on a tape recorder her mother had given her. In addition to her love for country music, McCurdy cites the Eagles, Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young as influences, and as a budding songwriter, she also gravitated toward the music of 70s singer/songwriters Carole King, James Taylor and Jim Croce. “I started writing with co-writers very seriously when I was 14 or 15,” McCurdy says. “After working on the television show, I would go to co-writers’ houses in LA, and on the weekends I’d write, so that was pretty much every day. It just got to a point where I’d say I was writing songs on my blog and everybody was really curious. I really wanted to share my music with people and let everybody hear what I’m about, so I put two songs on iTunes and that attracted label interest.”

Most record companies that came calling saw McCurdy as the next big pop star, but that’s a vision she didn’t share. “They said, ‘we want you to do pop, and I said, ‘I’m country and I want to really do country. That’s my favorite genre and that’s where I feel like I belong.’ They just all seemed to want to push that,” she says of those trying to steer her toward the pop world. “I felt so uneasy about that. I just wouldn’t fit in there and I wouldn’t be doing what I wanted to be doing. I was really, really blessed to sign with Capitol.”

McCurdy’s deal with Capitol Nashville provided a birthday memory she’ll always remember. “I signed on my 17^th birthday, so it was really special,” she recalls of inking her deal June 26, 2009. “It was in the conference room and there was this cake with dots on it–dots are my favorite thing–and a big banner that said ‘Happy Birthday Jennette!’ Everybody from Capitol stopped in and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ and it was so special.  I can’t imagine anything better than a record deal on your birthday. I thought I was in a dream.  I thought I’d just wake up and go, ‘wow, that was a great experience,’ but it’s real!”

McCurdy’s Capitol debut reflects her uniqueness as an artist. She’s both an old soul and an effervescent teen. She’s a movie buff who credits the original Star Wars with giving her the acting bug and one of her career highlights is a role in the film “Hollywood Homicide” with her hero Harrison Ford. She boasts an acting resume that includes “CSI,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Judging Amy,” “Law and Order SVU,” “Zoey 101” and “Will & Grace.” She’s been nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a television series and was nominated for a 2009 Teen Choice Award for Favorite Sidekick for her work on “iCarly.”

      Though still in her teens, there’s a depth to McCurdy’s work that comes, in part, from weathering some difficult times. Her mother battled cancer and won, but the disease impacted the entire family, including young Jennette. “I knew how severe that her cancer had gotten,” McCurdy says. “She was in the hospital for so long. It was difficult dealing with it, but I think it’s so important to write about things like that. I could write other things or could just write somebody else’s song, but it wouldn’t be true to myself. The whole point of making music is to share your experiences with people because they can relate more if you just tell your story honestly.”

   McCurdy’s ability to tap into a wealth of emotional experiences and channel them into songs has earned her the respect of many of Nashville’s top songwriters. On her debut disc, she collaborates with Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley on two tunes—“The Summer Song” and “Heart of a Child.” “I remember walking into Charles’ house to write and just feeling shaky and really starstruck,” McCurdy admits of the collaborative process, which yielded two strong additions to the album. “’Summer Song” is a really fun, upbeat summery kind of song. It’ll make you want to turn it up in your speakers and drive to the beach. ‘Heart Of A Child’ is at the opposite end of the spectrum. It’s a little sad. It’s reflecting on what it’s like to be a child and how great it is to be kind of carefree and not have a worry in the world.”

In working on her album, McCurdy also co-wrote with Jessi Alexander, whose credits include Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” Liz Rose, who also writes with Taylor Swift and Luke Laird, who co-wrote two chart topping hits for Carrie Underwood. “I have a cut I wrote with Ty Stevens and Joy Williams [titled] ‘Never Let Me Down,’” says McCurdy. “It’s one of my favorites.  I also wrote ‘Not That Far Away’ with Blair Daily and Rachel Proctor, who are so great. Then I did a Monty Powell and Anna Wilson song.  To walk into Monty’s house to write with him was another starstruck experience.  I couldn’t believe it! I’ve always been interested in Keith Urban and loved him because of his sensitivity, how genuine he was and how much his heart is just right out there in his songs. I found out that the person he wrote with a lot was actually Monty.” 

Produced by Paul Worley, McCurdy’s album features some of Nashville’s most notable musicians, including Chris Rodriguez, Biff Watson, guitarist Kenny Greenberg, drummer Chad Cromwell and keyboardist Mike Rojas.  “He’s been really awesome,” McCurdy says of Worley, “and the band that he assembled I think is the most fantastic element. They added such flavor. I loved them.”

McCurdy says her approach to creating her debut album was simple:  “I really wanted to just be honest to myself, stay true to myself with every song and deliver a CD that I felt reflected who I am as a person and tell the stories of my life because I feel that that’s what people will relate to the most. Country music strikes a chord in peoples hearts that makes you think ‘wow! I know exactly what they’re talking about. I felt that before.’ I wanted people to be able to feel the same thing and I felt that could only be accomplished if I really wrote what I knew.”

In addition to juggling dual careers as a recording artist and actress, McCurdy is also a scriptwriter and for four years published her own magazine for young girls. Yet she still finds time to support several charities including St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Cody Waters Foundation, Invisible Children and the Starlight Children’s Foundation. “It’s important to give back.  I have such great blessings. It’s important to try to use it for good,” says McCurdy, who takes her status as a role model for other young people very seriously. “When I started getting so many letters from kids saying they looked up to me and letters from parents and parents saying ‘thank you for setting an example, for being somebody that our kids can look up to’ that really humbled me and made me realize the importance of being a good role model. Everything in life has a choice and it’s a matter of making the right choice and going from there. It’s important to live your life with a certain level of integrity and honesty.”

Remember singer/song writer BC Jean? Well maybe you do and you just do not realize it. Jean is best known for co-writing the hit single “If I Were A Boy” with Toby Gad for Beyonce. At that time BC was a relatively unknown 21 year old singer/song writer who quickly got a hard dose of reality about the music industry.  BC did in fact become famous for writing “If I Were A Boy” for Beyonce with Gad, but she did not realize this until after Beyonce had recorded it to be the first single from her latest album,  I Am…Sasha Fierce. This was according to an article published by FoxNews.com from October 2008. (”Beyonce’s New ‘Stolen’ Hit Record” By Roger Friedman) . In This article it is suggested that the song’s co-writer and producer, Toby Gad began shopping the single to mainstream Pop artists after plans to use  that song and others as part of Gad’s own album changed.

“Altogether, I am told, BC Jean wrote and recorded about a dozen songs with Gad for an album the producer was planning to make of his own. When the deal fell apart, Gad — whose 300 plus credits are all co-written, never solo — took the songs and started marketing them to big name, established artists. BC Jean was not made aware of Beyonce recording the song until a stranger called her and told her the news. Since then both BC and her mother/manager, Lori Carlson have come to terms with Beyonce’s team about the rights and publishing. Although Jean endured one of the most heartbreaking experiences any up and coming singer could imagine, maybe the later acclaim and buzz she recieved from writing the song for someone as high profile as Beyonce Knowles may have proven to be a blessing in disguise. Since then she has signed a deal with J. Records, part of the Jive/RCA Label Group of Sony Music. She is currently working on her debut album with the likes of Dallas Austin, The Matrix and even Toby Gad. The album is due for release later this year.  Recently J. Records serviced what is meant to be BC’s debut single as an artist. Last week Usher released the video for “DJ Got Us Falling In Love”  the first single from his current EP, Versus. The video was released on August 25th, a day after the EP’s official release from LaFace/Jive Records/JLG. This debut EP from Usher was released as an intended deluxe edition of his latest album, Ramond V Raymond . It was described as the last chapter of the “Raymond” album. This explains why many of the songs have  similar themes and sounds with Dance/R&B  and Electropop that was found on his previous project. Clizbeats’ artist of the month for July, Enique Iglesias, continues to make moves with his Universal Republic debut Euphoria. His first album in over 3 years, Enrique has been able to use the success of his Lionel Richie sampled track ” I Like it” to not only give him a come back hit, but one of the stand out songs of summer 2010.  Now he is following up his top 20 international smash with the reggae influenced groove called “One Day At A Time.”  This Red One produced track’s island stylings are further  accented by the accompaniment of by the smooth sounds of    rapper Akon, providing his best take on what many summer vacationers may join me in affectionately calling, his “mixed drinks melodies.”  It is another wonderful addition to an otherwise great overall album for 2010. Can’t get enough Enrique?  Well Word is that he plans to follow his album’s success with a 2011 tour sure to be hitting a city near you.  We will keep you posted on all the details as they materialize!
