D-Block/Bad Boy Entertainment is pleased to announce the release of rapper/singer/songwriter Tommy Stars highly anticipated debut street album “Purple Rain.” The project is scheduled to be released on May 18, 2010. Purple Rain will be released to various hip-hop sites and myspace/facebook fan pages. The album will also be digitally distributed through iTunes and rhapsody in the coming weeks.
Tommy commented on the title of the release by noting that it takes its title from Purple Rain maker Prince. “I choose the title “Purple Rain” because I want to bring something new to the industry like Prince did during his era; I want to be that new and refreshing voice for hip-hop/r&b,” he says. “Prince has influenced me and a lot of other artist in the game. Just looking at his career path gives me that inspiration and motivation to be innovative and push the envelope with my music”
The Philadelphia native has collaborated with some hip-hop’s leading artist for the project from Lil Wayne, Drake, Trey Songz, Birdman, Jacki-O, and D-Block (Sheek Louch, Jadakiss, and Styles P). “I’ve been cool with D-Block for awhile; I was featured on like 4 songs on their “No Security” album they like family to me.” When asked about his “Slow It Down “collaboration with Drake he replied “it’s a blessing to be able to work with another artist that you admire and that you musically connect with, it feels good to be able to bring fans together and let them enjoy good music”
When asked about why people call him Captain Hook, Tommy responds by saying that he was given that name by other artist that he has worked with. He has written hooks for artist such as Red Café, Max B, J-Kwon, Jibbs, D-Block, Jacki-O and some others.
“I’ve always had a knack for writing hooks and songs. Other artist would hear my work and ask me to write hooks for them,” he explains. “A lot of artists don’t like writing hooks it’s kind of difficult because you definitely want the hook to be catchy and get the fans attention and make them want to sing along [laughs Tommy]
