Record label So So Def has and its founder/Kris Kross producer Jermain Dupri have released a joint statement in reaction the death of rapper Chris Kelly.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”– Donna Kelly Pratte (mother) & The So So Def Family

TMZ is reporting that the cause of death is suspected to be related to use of a mix of cocaine and heroine. According to a police report obtained by TMZ paramedics initially responded to Kelly’s Atlanta home around 3 PM EST — after his mother called 911 asking for medical assistance.  Kelly was found lying unresponsively on the living room couch with “no life signs.”  He was transported to the hospital where he was officially pronounced dead a few hours later.

TMZ is reporting that Kelly’s mother told police that he had been taking the mixture of cocaine and heroine known as “speedballs” the night before.  Both Kelly’s mother and uncle told told investigators that he had an “extensive history of drug use.”  Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.
