Sonia Rao

Sonia Rao

Artist Sonia Rao combines her soulful voice with piano, singing her
original songs. Some are haunting, some are joyful, some are gritty
and raw, but all feature Sonia’s incredible voice and honest lyrics.
Fans are struck by how deeply personal her songs are; in listening to
her lyrics, one feels they are hearing her innermost thoughts and
feelings. These intimate stories, combined with Sonia’s striking
voice, draw listeners to her music. Following her recent appearance on
NBC’s The Voice, Sonia released her debut album, ‘Calm Her’ in August
2011.

Growing up in New Jersey with first-generation immigrant parents,
Sonia says that her parents have challenged her decision to pursue
music every step of the way, a process that has helped her clarify and
articulate why playing music is so important to her. Since childhood,
Sonia searched for a way to express herself that “felt like enough”.
From painting to dancing to acting out, nothing felt like a deep
enough expression of her emotions until she wrote her first song in
the spring of 2010. Sonia says, “Once I wrote that first song, I spent
the rest of that year in San Francisco writing in my little
multicolored room, drinking insane amounts of coffee, introducing my
classical violin to the blues and country, and collaborating with as
many musicians as I could.”
‘Calm Her’ was the result of an amazing fundraising effort in which
fans, friends, and fellow artists from The Voice, raised thousands of
dollars to help Sonia create her album. When asked about the
inspiration for the album title, Sonia says, “I wrote the title track,
‘Calm Her’, about society’s attempt to stifle the intuitive, creative,
and sexual energy of women. What I am trying to say with this song,
with this album, and with my own actions is that society will never be
able to suppress something as enormous as the feminine, and thus, it
is impossible to ‘Calm Her’.
As she sings about in the delightful track “Here, Now,” Sonia is
grateful for all of the support in her life and feels incredibly lucky
to be living her passion. You can hear her music on iTunes and find
her performing in San Francisco and Los Angeles at venues such as The
Hotel Café, The Viper Room, and Yoshi’s.

Mark Russell

Mark Russell

Everybody knows that in college, it’s the jocks and the musicians who get the girls.  Mark Russell was both.  Playing lacrosse at his university in Florida, Mark’s friends didn’t even know he sang, at first: “I was sitting in my dorm room with my guitar, singing quietly to myself when my roommates walked in. They had never heard me – I didn’t have any confidence in my voice – so they started making me go around door-to-door in the girls’ dorm: ‘Can I sing for you?’ I was still kinda quiet and shy with it, though”. You’d never guess that now.  After having multiple songs featured on hit MTV shows “The Real World” and “Warren the Ape”, being featured on HitsDailyDouble and JustinTimberlake.com, and playing with Jon McLaughlin, Hanson, Avril Lavigne and One Republic, Mark’s definitely come out of his shell.

Mark’s powerhouse vocals soar on songs like the hopeful “Close My Eyes”, heartbreaking “Miles Away” and purposeful “September”.  We get the quiet, sensitive side on the Mark’s initial release, “Dance”, quirky and fun “She-Devil” and sweet, sentimental ballad “I’m Still Feeling You”.  Mark’s wide range of influences show themselves on the naughty “Get Your Freak Out”, country-born “Hell or High Water” and club song “AYO”. “I love Maroon5 and One Republic, Ryan Cabrera and Matt Nathanson, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown”, Mark says of his taste in music.  “I’m all across the board, but I don’t see that as a bad thing.”

Mark actually raps a bit on “Dance”, the One Republic-esque debut release from his upcoming EP.  “It was one of those things that just came up in the studio and for a minute we were like, ‘Wait, should I really be rapping on a song?’ but it just fit and afterwards we couldn’t think of the song without it”.  In “Dance”, a sweet piano and clean drums move the story of a boyfriend who thinks his girlfriend might be cheating on him, comparing himself to the new guy: “Can he dance the way I dance / Move the way I move / Stay up all night just to talk to you / Can he do like I do”.

From the pure tones of “Dance” to the messier “Close My Eyes”, Mark’s vocals tie everything together.  “I close my eyes / See you in my dreams / When it’s my dream I can be anything / And tonight you’re all I need / I close my eyes and see you in my dreams”.  Duel melodies on the chorus and bridge are reminiscent of Hall & Oates or Simon & Garfunkel, supported by full, roaring drums and guitars that are anything but dated.  The chorus melodies soar, bringing us to that dream state where we can see what Mark sees in his dreams, being with the one we love from afar.

“Miles Away” and “September” continue to show off Mark’s compelling vocals with strong choruses and tender verses.  Written with ASCAP songwriter of the year Dan Muckala (Backstreet Boys, Nick Lachey), “Miles Away” battles the hardships of growing distance in a relationship, both physical and emotional.  “September” brings back some of the fun, acoustic guitar-driven elements of the best of 90’s rock, particularly in the staccato repetition in the verse “We’ve finally fallen into love now / luh-uh-uh-uh-ove right now”.

Mark shows another dimension in his softer ballads, like “I’m Still Feeling You”, written with renowned Nashville-based songwriter Reggie Hamm (American Idol / David Cook).  “I love Nashville”, says Mark.  “There’s so many talented people in this really very small community, and everyone’s friendly and just wants to write some great music.”  Also while in Nashville, Mark wrote “Hell or High Water”, an uptempo, country-inspired rock song about the lengths you’ll go to get a “love like that”, with gold-certified artists Amanda and Tyler Wilkinson.

Turning the page from compassionate love songs, we get probably a more honest tale of love lost in the lightly picked acoustic “She-Devil”, where Mark shows off his poignant falsetto range. “She ain’t the devil, no / but she reached right out and stole my soul / She ain’t the devil, no / so beautiful you’d never even know / she made me eat the apple / but she ain’t the devil”.

Mark co-wrote “She-Devil” and debut release “Dance” with boyband-er turned producer Justin Thorne, as he did naughty dance song “Get Your Freak Out”, a lively anthem that will make girls of all ages want to turn loose.  “Play a role / You can be my girl scout / down the pole / it’s time to earn your badge now / I’ll never tell / Your mom will never find out / We can get your freak out”.  “AYO”, another Nashville-born tune, is another dance song about letting go and just having fun that we’ll be sure to hear remixed in the clubs on a Friday night.

“At the end of the day I just want to make music that I’d like to listen to”, Mark says, “and I listen to all different kinds of music.  It all has a bit of me in it so hopefully it all works together. I think the fans like it, and that’s all that matters to me”.

Anhayla

Anhayla

Growing up, Anhayla was always musically inclined. Originally born in Norfolk, VA on May 24, 1988, Anhayla began singing at the tender age of five in church. For her, music was a childhood friend she kept throughout adulthood. ‘I started singing when I was like five and fell in love.’ Anhayla grew up in a religious household and wasn’t exposed to many other genres of music outside of gospel. However, there was one Christmas when her mom gave her Aaliyah’s ‘One in a Million’ album . This was the first album Anhayla listened all the way through repetitively, which molded her taste in R&B music. Destined for stardom since day one, the Virginia native’s determined spirit first materialized all before she’d turn a teenager. After winning Most Talented singing Mariah Carey’s ‘Hero’ at her first public appearance in a local pageant, Anhayla began to take her musical ability more seriously. When she was 8 years old, she moved to Richmond, VA were she began to develop her own voice in music. Opera became the first genre of music that she received formal training in while performing in the Greater Richmond Children’s choir at the age of 9. With this nationally-known children’s choir, she performed nationwide at such places as Carnegie Hall in New York City. She taught herself how to write songs and play the piano at the age of 12. Once she started playing the keys and singing, it was like a dynamic duo. Capitalizing on this talent, she began composing her own music and lyrics. ‘I write songs everyday, it’s my outlet,’ she explains. After graduating from high school, Anhayla managed to continue juggling all these tasks when she enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C. While on her journey to actively advance her music career and attend school for Fine Arts/Music Theater, Anhayla eventually ran into producer/songwriter/CEO of Master Mind Entertainment and recent Howard alum, Chris Hines. She first heard about Hines in the campus newspaper and had taken a course with him. After realizing each other’s passion for music, there was immediate chemistry between the two. In 2007, the duo recorded Anhayla’s first single ‘Victim of Love.’ Chris is a 21-year-old Marketing major from Howard University and is responsible for executively producing, arranging, and co-writing for all the songs on the 15+track album. All the artist featured on the CD are aspiring and talented artists also from Howard University (Meshlife Wordpress). Her style of music can be best described as infused Soul/R&b/Blues; however, it is not easily defined. ‘I just take a little bit from every genre and put it into my music. I sing about life so I try not to put myself in a box.’ Some of her influences include Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill, Celine Dion, Pink, Shania twain, Patsy Cline, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Shirley Ceaser, In addition to musical impacts, Anhayla considers her family as major influences in her career. Although Anhayla wants to ultimately pursue a music career, she’s also taking advantage of her accounting major at Virginia Commonwealth University. Anhayla is multi-talented and thrives to share her passion to write, compose, and record music that will touch the spirit of the soul and keep people longing for her next project. THIS IS DEFINITELY JUST THE BEGINNING FOR ANHAYLA…

ZZ Ward

ZZ Ward

“Blues pop meets dirty beats.”  This is how this month’s Indie Artist Spotlight artist, ZZ Ward describes her unique musical style.

Her eclectic style has been cultivated through an array of different influences.  ZZ grew up the daughter of a blues harmonica player and songwriter in Roseburg, Oregon.  She was influenced heavily by blues not only due to her father’s music, but also through listening to her parent’s vinyl records which included the likes of blues greats Big Mama Thornton and Muddy Waters.  The influence of blues permeates throughout Ward’s music in the sense of heart and soul that bubbles to the surface in each of her recordings.  ZZ is also heavily influenced by her love for hip hop music.  While living in Oregon she began to write and sing choruses for local rap artists.  This even gave her the chance to open for rap artists Mike Jones and Bone Thugs N Harmony.  She describes the fusion of these two genres in her music as, “very easy and very natural.  It just made sense with who I am and where I come from.”  She also says that, “if I would just do blues I don’t think I would be satisfied without the hip hop beats and without the hip hop influences.”

ZZ now lives in Los Angeles, CA where she is currently working with the famed multi platinum creative executive and songwriter Evan “Kidd” Bogart who is the man behind the worldwide hits “Halo” by Beyonce and “S.O.S.” by Rihanna, amongst others.  She recently had one of her songs, “Catchurfall” featured on the television show The Glades.  “It didn’t really hit me as hard as I thought it would.  When I heard my song on the episode I was like, ‘oh that’s cool’ but I think the coolest part for me has been the response from people who have become fans because of that song.  That is what is so cool to me, that having my song on The Glades has gotten my music heard by so many people that wouldn’t have heard it otherwise.”

These new fans can now look forward to an EP that ZZ is currently working on which is expected to be out in October.  She is currently working with producers getting the sound right and she is very excited about the release.  “I feel like I have really hit my stride as far as writing goes.  I think that most of these songs that are going to be on this EP are songs that I have written by myself because I feel like when I can really sit down and I can really be honest with my writing, you know,  everybody likes different kinds of music, but I think what makes me special is that my voice is sincere and the words that I’m saying are real and the stories I’m telling are sincere and they are things that are really happening in my life.”

Until her EP is released you can check her out on her website www.zzward.com/ her Facebook page www.facebook.com/ZZWard  as well as on Twitter www.twitter.com/zzwardmusic

Introducing Alicia Madison

Alicia Madison

Alicia Madison

It has always been a passion of ours at Clizbeats.com to introduce everyone to new and exciting talent on the rise. With that said it is our pleasure to introduce you to New Jersey’s  Alicia Madison! Alicia is one of those special people who always knew she wanted to be a singer from a very young age, and is determined enough to do what is neede to make her dream come true. Like many singers she began with every opportunity she could. She sang in school, church and various fund raisers. That eventually lead to an opportunity to sing the national anthem at New Jersey’s Blue Claw stadium at age 16.

Since age 17, Alicia has been the front singer with several wedding bands throughout the tri-state area as well as performing in various clubs.   While attending high school, Alicia travelled to New York City  every week for voice training with  songwriter, Tina Shafer and acting coach, Caroline Thomas.  While training, working and going to school, Alicia also found time to help with fundraising events, some of which included working with many soap opera stars.  Several people from ABC’s All My Children took such a liking to her that they invited her to play an extra in two episodes of the show standing side by side with acclaimed soap opera actress Susan Lucci.

Later during college, Alicia’s love for music inspired her to become a  vocal coach at Freehold New Jersay’s, Music University. Soon after that, Alica got an internship at the New York offices of Warner Bros. Records. It was there where she met Tommy Page, a former Warner Bros. recording artist turned music executive. At the time Tommy was VP of A&R at Warner Bros. He has worked with the likes of Ashley Tisdale, Charice, Iyaz amd many others. One day Tommy got to hear Alicia sing and was impressed with her talent. He quickly introduced her to Gary Salzman of Big Management  With her manager’s direction, Alicia was soon introduced to writers David Worby and Michael Grant to begin the writing of what would be her first single.

“The whole writing and recording process has been a great learning experience. The writing was the scariest part for me,” says Madison. “It was really hard for me to be that vulnerable and let out my deepest and darkest feelings, but like many other musicians will say, it is the best therapy you can ever experience. It’s true, the best songs are made when you put all your emotions out on the table and just go for it.”

The song writing led to the creation of the song “Superstar”, a dance club track that gets anyone on the dancefloor that hears it

‘Superstar’ was one of those songs that I just had to write,” exclaims Madison. “It is about a person who knows they look good and expects attention from everyone around them….someone who believes they are some kind of celebrity or something.  I’m sure people can relate!”The song was released on May 2nd on ITunes! Take a listen below!
