Have you heard the new and exciting sound of British Alternative/Soul duo, Graffiti6 yet? They have a cutting edge style and sound that is beginning to get a lot of attention here in the USA! Their debut album Colours was recently released byCapitol Records on January 24th , and they made their very first late night TV appearance on January 13th, performing their hit single,”Free” on ―The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. They made their national TV debut last month when they performed the single on ―The Rachael Ray Show.‖
“Free”, the first single from Colours is climbing its way to the top of the AAA radio airplay charts where it is currently #9 and will impact the Hot AC format next month. It was selected as “Pick Of The Week” by USA Today, praising the track’s “bassline and singer Jamie Scott’s exquisite falsetto breaks.” Marie Claire described the song as “Pop at its most glorious” and called Jamie Scott’s falsetto “swoon-worthy,‖ while Billboard said in their review of the track that Scott and producer TommyD “makes the art of crafting pop gems seem like the easiest task in the world.”
The video for “Free” is currently in rotation on MTVU and VH1. It was featured as a “One to Watch” on last week’s VH1 Top Twenty Countdown.
Graffiti6 is currently on a nationwide tour with Sony recording artist Augustana on January 17th in Anaheim, CA, running through Feb. 7th in Atlanta, GA (full schedule below). They wrapped a tour last month with Latin singer-songwriter Xemina. 2011also saw them play Austin City Limits and shows with artists such as Fitz And The Tantrums, Oh Land, Talib Kweli and more.
For those that do not already know, Graffiti6 is collaboration between singer/songwriter Jamie Scottand songwriter-producer TommyD.American Pop music fans will remember Jamie Scott as a featured artist on Jive Records’ 2006 soundtrack to Touchstone Pictures’ Step Up. Scott’s “Made” was featured on the soundtrack, and he played the role of “Colin” in the film. Jamie was originally signed as a solo artist to Jive’s parent company at that time, Sony BMG. But due to the corporate restructuring of Sony and BMG during their merger of 2004, his intended debut album, Soul Searching was never released. Scott also wrote and produced for other artists including Enrique Iglesias, JLS, One Direction, Nicole Scherzinger, Michael Kiwanuka
The other half of the duo is Writer/producer/DJ, TommyD, who has worked with, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Kylie Minogue, KT Tunstall and others. The first song they wrote together was “Stare Into the Sun.” The track was chosen to soundtrack a TV ad campaign for The Sun newspaper.
After Sony/ATV Music Publishing submitted the song to The Sun newspaper, the exposure they got from the campaign encouraged Jamie and Tommy to write and record even more music. It would be the music that would become their debut album.
The band first decided to put out their music on their own label, N.W. Free Music. That music was then exclusively licensed to Capitol Records for further distribution.
That music was praised in a five-star review of from London newspaper The Independent raving that the album “a mélange of pop, psychedelia, R&B, and British Northern Soul.” It goes on to say that they have a soul that “sparkles with invention and throbs with emotion”. They are now beginning to finally ready to break state-side with the release of Colours. Graffiti6’s songs have been heard on Grey’s Anatomy, Covert Affairs, CSI: NY, One Tree Hill, Parenthood, Chelsea Settles, Basketball Wives and the MTV series Teen Wolf. MTV has also featured the group in its Freshmen 5, Artist to Watch, and Push campaigns.

(New York, NY ) – superstar DJ and producer David Guetta continues to dominate in 2012 with his GRAMMY® nominated 5th studio album „Nothing But The Beat‟ (Capitol/Astralwerks) as #1 single “Without You” featuring Usher reaches double platinum status and new single “Turn Me On” featuring Nicki Minaj surpasses gold status. “Turn Me On” was the #1 selling single in the county last week, helping to push it to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The ascent marks Guetta‟s fourth Hot 100 top ten and matches his previous highest rank with “Without You.” “Turn Me On,” Guetta‟s 3rd single from „Nothing But The Beat‟ also moved into the top 15 on the Top 40 airplay charts this week and is rapidly climbing. It follows Guetta‟s first ever #1 Top 40 song “Without You” and the top 10, platinum-selling “Where Them Girls At” featuring Flo-Rida and Minaj. The video for “Turn Me On” was officially premiered on VEVO Today, January 31st.
Already named iTunes Rewind 2011: Best Dance Album, „Nothing But The Beat‟ is up for for “Best Dance/Electronica Album” at this year‟s GRAMMY® Awards and Guetta‟s electro track “Sunshine” which he produced with Swedish DJ Avicii is nominated for “Best Dance Recording.” Guetta won the GRAMMY® award for “Best Remixed Recording” back-to-back in 2010 and 2011.
A string of February U.S. shows have been announced starting Feb. 2nd at the Washington Ave Armory in Albany, NY. David Guetta has also been announced to headline Ultra Music Festival in Miami on March 25th and will headline the dance tent at Coachella on April 14th and 24th. The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that music and TV executive, Simon Cowell will be developing a new reality competition, only this time he will not be searching for singers. This time around it will be a competition searching for the world’s best DJ.
Through the years Simon has worked with some of the best singers in the world, but for this show Cowell will be one of the most well known people in Hip Hop who’s music has made an impact on the art of DJing. Cowell’s SYCO Entertainment is partnering with and Will and JadaPinkett Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television to launch the format, which is expected to be shopped internationally and domestically.
It is undeniable that Will Smith is one of the most accomplished actors and producers in Hollywood, but Hip Hop fans also remember him as one half of the groundbreaking group, DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince. While Jeff and Will became the first Rap group to ever win a Grammy Award in 1989 for “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” it is also important to note that the group did quite a bit to bring the Hip Hop art of DJing to mainstream America. They helped bring Hip Hop and Rap to new heights of popularity with their brand of radio friendly songs that achieved an unprecedented amount of Pop success. However with every Pop single the group released, they backed up with a majority of their album cuts devoted to showing DJ Jazzy Jeff’s talents as a DJ, and allowed him to expand the horizon of where the art form can go. Even as a solo artist in the 90s to the Pop music world, Will Smith never lost the value of having Jeff at his side. The two reunited on Will’s 1999 album, Willennium. They performed on the album together as “DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince” on the old school style songs “So Fresh’ and “Pump Me Up.”
Now as Pop music is becoming more and more inspired by electronic House music DJs are once again in the spotlight. As we first reported to you in December, French DJ David Guetta became the first DJ and music artist to be handprinted at the legendary Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Also other European DJs like Calvin Harris and Avicii are making an impact in America teaming up and inspiring artists like Rihanna and Flo Rida. Simon Cowell is seeing the power these people are having on the pulse of music as it is growing to become more and more multicultural.
“DJ’s are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show,” Cowell said in a recent statement. He took to his Twitter account with his excitement about the new show.
“Excited to announce new DJ show. I will NOT be judging this show. Excited to be working with @jadapsmith. Stay tuned!” (Jada Pinkett Pinkett Smith)
