By now many of you have probably heard about the death of Apple, Inc. founder Steve Jobs. Jobs died yesterday with his family after a long battle with cancer. He was 56 years old.
The innovation of Steve Jobs was so great that he forever changed the face of consumer electronics. One of the areas he applied those new electronics to most was the music industry. Through the creation of the Ipod and Itunes, Jobs is credited with many of the forward thinking ideas that essentially saved the music industry from collapse in the chaotic and entirely unregulated pre-Itunes digital market place era. His innovation recognized the digital media paradigm shift that was occurring in entertainment at the time. Through that recognition, and his understanding of how to deal with, he became one of the most effective digital media shepherds the music business has ever had. This is because the Ipod and Itunes didn’t serve as just amazing inventions, for the music industry they were tools that taught us where the world was going, and where it is today. Today’s entire entertainment industry, and the world in general for that matter wouldn’t have been the same without him.
Below is a look at the career of the man that some call the modern day Thomas Edison.
”Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the trouble makers, the round pegs in the square holes, the ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them, because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do!” -Think Different. Apple
Justin Bieber “UNDER THE MISTLETOE” RBMG/Island Def Jam Music Group
(October 5, 2011 – New York, NY)
Global phenomenon Justin Bieber begins his third year on the world stage with the November 1st release of his first Christmas album UNDER THE MISTLETOE. The album is a seasonal mix of traditional Christmas standards and newly penned holiday music largely co-written by Justin Bieber. UNDER THE MISTLETOE will be available both as a standard and as a deluxe CD + DVD edition. The deluxe CD edition includes 25 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage plus the video for “Pray,” along with four additional holiday songs. UNDER THE MISTLETOE’s first single “Mistletoe” will be launched worldwide on October 18th and the accompanying video was shot last week in Franklin, Tennessee by Roman White, who also directed Justin’s “One Less Lonely Girl” video.
“Mistletoe” was written and produced by the hit making Canadian duo known as The Messengers (Nasri and Adam Messinger). The Messengers first wrote and produced Justin’s chart-dominating hit of early 2011, “Never Say Never,” title track off his hit concert film, Never Say Never. In addition to “Mistletoe,” the Messengers wrote and produced the songs “Christmas Love” and “Home For Christmas” (featuring The Band Perry). The album UNDER THE MISTLETOE was Produced by Kuk Harrell.
In just two short years Justin Bieber has accumulated over 13 million Twitter followers, 36 million facebook friends and 2.2 billion combined views on You Tube and VEVO. UNDER THE MISTLETOE is 17 year old Justin’s fifth release since he first arrived on Island Records/RBMG in November 2009 with My World. My World contained his worldwide debut hit, “One Time,” the follow-up “One Less Lonely Girl,” and two more chart hits, “Love Me” and “Favorite Girl.” With that, Justin became the first solo artist in history to send four songs from a debut album into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 prior to the album’s release. To date, Justin has amassed more than 11 million in worldwide CD sales.

Los Angeles, CA — Multi-platinum selling rock band DAUGHTRY has announced details about its highly anticipated third album, which will be called Break The Spell. It will be released by 19 Recordings/RCA Records on November 21st — five years to the day that the band released its self-titled 5x-platinum debut album, which shot straight to No. 1, as did the group’s second, 2009’s platinum Leave This Town. Two tracks have been released to radio: “Renegade,” which is climbing the chart at Rock, and “Crawling Back To You,” which was the No. 1 Most-Added track at Hot AC this week and could become the band’s fifth No. 1 at the format.
Break the Spell is a gleaming showcase for frontman Chris Daughtry’s powerful, emotionally resonant voice and knack for relentless melodic hooks and big, anthemic choruses. Produced by Howard Benson, who produced Daughtry’s two previous albums, Break The Spell gives the band room to evolve musically while aiming to satisfy its many long-time fans. “Going in to the writing sessions, we said, ‘Let’s not try to sound like anything. Let’s just write, and see what happens,’” says Chris, who co-wrote every song with either one of his band-mates (guitarists Josh Steely and Brian Craddock and bassist Josh Paul) or collaborators such as Marti Frederiksen, Busbee, and Bret James. “We came up with some pretty interesting tunes that sound nothing like anything we’ve done before. Even though some of them didn’t make the album, the process stretched us and took us to new places. It was an absolutely inspirational experience.”
The risk-taking is apparent on such primal, slithering rockers as the hard-driving “Renegade,” which Entertainment Weekly praised for its “wind-in-your-eyes hook and leather-glove-to-the-sky chorus” calling it “the ideal soundtrack for hitting the highway.” “I wanted it to be really upbeat and hard-hitting,” Chris explains. “At the same time, “Crawling Back To You” is a more uplifting and hopeful song that will appeal to fans who have been with us from the start.” More details about Break The Spell, including the track-listing, will be released in the coming weeks so stay tuned to www.daughtryofficial.com.
In other Daughtry news, the band has a song featured on the soundtrack to the video game Batman: Arkham City, a heavy rocker called “Drown In You” that is exclusive to the soundtrack, which will be released on October 4th. Daughtry is also featured on the upcoming ZZ Top tribute album A Tribute From Friends with a cover of “Waitin’ For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago” due out October 11th.

Timbaland Featuring David Guetta And Pitbull “Pass At Me” Mosley Music Group/Blackground/Interscope Records
Have you gotten to check out Timbaland’s hot new music video yet? It is for his new single, “Pass At Me” featuring French DJ, David Guetta and Pitbull. It was first released on September 13th, and is the first single from Timbaland’s forthcoming album Timbaland Presents Shock Value III. Like the two albums before it in the series, Shock Value III showcases Timbaland’s ability to be paired up with a collection of different artits from various genres, and create something special with them, in a way that only he can. Throughout the years Timbaland has been able to create a sound with a distinctive use of vocals, electronic tones, and drum patterns tied together in a way that progressively fuses melody together with rhythm. These songs usually then push the boundries of Pop song structure. As he has grown as a producer and musician, he has used the “Timbaland sound” to help redefine the sound of various artists. In many ways Tim’s work with an artist can be considered a milestone in their career, in which their sound is forever influenced by the growth they experienced while working with him. This is particularly notable when listening to the work of artists like Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Chris Cornell and Nelly Furtado.
The Shock Value series has allowed Tim to do this on a worldwide platform branded as his own album, much like Quincy Jones has done with his albums. This process has allowed Timbaland to introduce us to artists from his Mosley Music Group like Keri Hilson and OneRepublic, and musically experiment with some of artists he is fans of like Elton John, Jet, Daughtry and many others. These projects have certainly lived up to the title, as these songs have allowed Timbaland to reach out to new fans. Many of these songs gained a larger fan base outside of just his work with R&B and Hip Hop artists. The best example of this would probably have to be Timbaland’s remix of “Apologize” by OneRepublic. It is a song that was the most played song in Top 40 history at the time of its release.
Now with Shock Value III Timbaland hopes to expand his musical horizon once again. “Pass At Me” has Tim going to a new place. The David Guetta produced track allows him to walk into Guetta’s world of House music and mix it with Pitbull’s Latin Rhythm styled rhymes. The music video and image of the song allows Timbaland to push the envelope as well. The world first got a listen to Timbaland’s “Pass At Me” on a risque viral video clip promoting the photograph book, Culo by Raphael Mazzucco.
Culo, which means buttocks in Spanish and Italian, is a 240 page photograph book focussed on honoring a woman’s backside. The book is executive produced by Interscope Records Chairman, Jimmy Iovine and Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group Chairman, Sean “Diddy” Combs. The promotion of the book has been the primary vehicle behind the promotion of Timbaland’s “Pass At Me” online, which is also released by Interscope Records. In a recent article posted by Allhiphop.com, Diddy said the following about the book.
“Raphael is a true artist. He relies on instinct- capturing a raw, natural sense of beauty through his lens in CULO by Mazzucco that celebrates the female form. His work is passionate and powerful.”
The song ”Pass At Me” is serving as the book’s soundtrack as it is featured in the official music video for the song as well. In that same article from Allhiphop.com, Jimmy Iovine talks about
the book being an example of Interscope’s expanding vision for business, which now includes headphone lines, publishing, software and other ventures.
“We at Interscope put projects out with anyone we believe has a great idea and is a true talent, whether it’s a musician, photographer, software developer, or technology innovator,” Jimmy Iovine said. “Raphael fits perfectly into what we do. Interscope Records has always been a heat-seeking missile when it comes to shifts in popular culture, whether inciting them or reacting to them swiftly. The impetus for this book is a little of both.”
As if the marketing behind Timbaland’s new music was not “shocking” enough, the music behind Shock Value III is going to be full of surprises as well. The new album will feature collaborations with the likes of Keri Hilson, Dev, Lyrica Anderson, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Missy Elliott, Chris Brown, Rekapse, and Demi Lovato, just to name a few. In related music news Timbaland and his production partner, Jim Beanz produced a few tracks for Demi Lovato’s third album Unbroken. including, “All Night Long” featuring Missy Elliott and himself. Unbroken’s new single is “Who’s That Boy”, produced by Timbaland’s artist, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, and features another Timbaland collaborator, Dev. Timbaland’s Timbaland Presents Shock Value III and Interscope’s Culo by Mazzucco are both due for release in November. Keep checking back with us for more details!

American Dad "Daddy's Gone" Fuzzy Door Productions/20th Century Fox
In case you missed it last night, season 7’s season premiere of Seth MacFarlane’s American Dad was the first “musical” episode of the series! The episode called, “Hot Water” features a guest appearance from singer/rapper/TV personality, Cee-Lo Green, as a talking/singing hot tub. The episode features a variety of different kinds of R&B/Hip Hop songs inspired by Cee-Lo’s performance style.
The episode also featured a boy band/R&B style parody called “Daddy’s Gone”, performed by Scott Grimes (Voice of Steve Smith) and Seth MacFarlane (as Roger Smith). The song became a viral hit online over night, after it was released on ITunes. Other than Cee-Lo MacFarlane has worked with many other musicians on his animated shows. Some of those artists included Kiss, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Barry Manilow, Hall & Oates, Kanye West, T-Pain, Justin Timberlake and others. MacFarlane’s productions have recived acclaimed for their scores by composers, Walter Murphy (Best Known For “A Fifth of Beethoven”, a Disco remix of the first movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. as featured on the Saturday Night Fever film and soundtrack) and Ron Jones.(Best known for composing scores for TV shows like Disney’s Ducktales, Chip And Dale Rescue Rangers, Superman (1988 TV Series), and Star Trek: The Nect Generation)
In other MacFarlane music news, some of you may remember that we featured Seth as our Artist Of The Month back in April. This was to help introduce everyone to his forthcoming album of Swing/Jazz standards, Music Is Better Than Words. Well that album is finaly getting released tomorrow, from Fuzzy Door Productions/Universal Republic Records Group. Below, you will find a clip of an interview Seth did with 89.3 FM KPCV, Southern California Public Radio about that album. It features guest appearances from Norah Jones and Sara Bareilles. The album was produced by Joel McNeely, (Best known for work on scores for films like Iron Will, Terminal Velocity, Ghots Of The Abyss, Jungle Book 2 and others.) who also does music with Seth on American Dad. You will also find some cool behind the scenecs clips of American Dad with Cee-Lo linked from Fox.com. Take a listeb to the viral hit “Daddy’s Gone” from Seth and Scott Grimes as well!

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced today what has been described by Engadget.com as a ”master plan for the social network.” Through what Facebook is calling the “Open Graph”, users will be able to integrate news and music services into their Facebook pages. Services that have partnered with FB’s Open Graph include music social sites like Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio and MOG. These partnering music services are joined by major media sources like Vevo, Netflix, and Hulu, which are already available via Zuckerberg’s latest production. This new media platform is able to be accessed through a series of custom apps that a user can activate based on their personal preferences.
This is a fascinating footnote in Facebook’s already impressive history. It will be interesting to see how it impacts fans’ experiences with their TV shows music video’s and songs if it will all be funneled to Facebook accounts across the globe. One thing’s for sure, just as the web’s growth has forever altered the compensation end of content publishing in the past , Facebook’s growth has the potential to shift the structure of how any kind of media, music especially, is promoted to its intended user. This is especially interesting when comparing to their biggest competitor, Myspace. Myspace’s foundational bread and butter when it came to music, was built around allowing independent artists to use them as a platform to display their music in any stage of development, and cultivate a grass roots following online of friended fans. Facebook is going the other direction by implementing the use of music and other media through very specific corporate deals, that by all implications wont disrupt the flow of what made the social media juggernaut so user friendly and successful. Is this a sign of the shrinking but still bigger music business catching on and regaining control of how and when fans receive and use their products? What ripple effect could this have? We may be witnessing the beginnings of a whole new way of getting things done. Time will tell.
Pop star/actor, Joe Jonas recently released the second music video for his upcoming solo debut album, Fastlife. The video was for a rhythmic R&B/Pop inspired song called, “Just in Love.” The song describes the mixture of different emotions and feelings felt when you discover a spark and realize you are, “just in love.”. This song is a great example of Joe’s recent efforts to show a more mature image with his music as a solo artist.
“Just In Love” follows Fastlife’s lead single, the Chris Brown and Brian Kennedy co-written single, “See No More.” Like “See No More” before it produced by Brian Kennedy, “Just In Love” enlists the talent of another well known producer on the verge of becoming a star in his own right. The track was produced by Los Angeles producer, Rob Knox. Rob is best known for his collaborative production with singer/songwriter/producer/actor, Justin Timberlake in his production group, The Y’s,
With his song writing partner, James Fauntleroy II, Knox has collaborated on notable Timberlake songs such as, “Dead And Gone” from T.I., “Love Sex Magic” from Ciara, and many others. Away from Timberlake Knox and Fauntleroy have also produced various tracks with, production group, The Underdogs. Fauntleroy had a hand in writing Chris Brown’s 2008 hit, “Take You Down”, as well as his duet with American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, “No Air.” Recently Fauntleroy played a role in writing and performing on Diddy-Dirty Money’s collaboration with Justin Timberlake,”Shades.” Now that tradition of co-writing with big names continues!
“Just In Love” was co-written by Joe Jonas with help from James Fauntleroy II and Rob Knox. It was then also produced by Knox as well. Rob Knox has worked closely with Joe during Fastlife’s creation, and has worked on multiple songs with him. Other notable co-writer/producers for the album include Danja and Claude Kelly.
With Rhythmic production style from producers that have had success with R&B style song writing, Fastlife is a clear departure from the Teen Pop/Rock on Joe’s previous work with his brothers. Joe has described the project as an upbeat record that fits its title. Last Month Joe discussed the album’s title, Fastlife and the meaning behind it in an MTV interview.
“I think my life has been so crazy busy for the past year and a half, and I kind of wanted to show people a little bit more of what my life is about, bring them into it a little bit more, so that’s been a fun experience.” Fastlife is due for release on October 11th from Hollywood Records. Joe is currently on a co-headlining tour with Jay Sean!
