American Idol is back for another season. This would make number 8 for the music media juggernaut. Since the show’s birth in 2002, they have been responsible for several musical greats like Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, and quite possibly the most successful winner, Carrie Underwood. Aside from the phenomenal singing talents, Idol has given a boost to the careers of the likes of, Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson, Simon Crowell, and revived the career of 80’s pop pop star Paula Abdul. American Idol has regularly pulled in superbowl level numbers and has been the formula of music entertainment copy cats for the last 8 years, but it seems like what was once tried and true, may be wearing thin to fans and Judges alike. Paula told phoenix’s Kiss FM that they will be reaching out for the help of a forth judge.
According to Paula’s report yesterday, the judge revealed the news about the newly evolved Idol foursome. This foursome is to now include record producer, Kara DioGuardi. Like the rest of you I have not seen how DioGuardi works with the rest of the judges. But when selecting people, there is a good chance she’ll know AI talent when she sees it. She has already worked with Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and Clay Aiken to name a few Idol alums. Some other mega pop star names include Enrique Iglesias, Ashlee Simpson, Hillary Duff, Gwen Stefani, and many others. Some of her most famous collaborators include: Dr Dre, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Polow Da Don, Will.I.Am, Marti Frederiksen, Chad Kroeger, Danja, John Shanks, Rodney Jerkins, Jeffrey Steele, Greg Wells, Eman Kiriakou, The Underdogs, John Fields, Mitch Allan, James Fauntleroy and David Hodges.
There are a couple of interesting elements to this new judge configuration. The first and highest sign of a change in the show is DioGuardi’s influence on the audition segment. In the past many of these decisions were decided by the best out of three to get through to Hollywood, but now with the foursome, the process has obviously changed. Secondly, like Simon before her, DioGuardi is not only a record producer, but an A&R record executive for Warner Brothers Records. This is interesting because the show’s imprint label, 19 Entertainment usually signs a deal with Sony Music Entertainment. Most of the Idol contestants sign with a label owned by Sony. (RCA, Jive Arista for example) Having DioGuardi to judge the competition and as an A&R for a Sony competitor like Warner Bros may be a conflict of interest for her . With no disrespect personally intended toward Paula, her mishaps trying to judge at the end of last year’s season justifies the new addition may. Adding a new credibility to the show’s decision making process will be very exciting. I am very interested to see if the show’s stunt is going to work.
